Intel MPI failures on Windows when connected to VPN

We are using a very old version of MPI:

Intel(R) MPI Library for Windows* OS, Version 5.1.3 Build 20151210

And experiencing problems launching MPI processes when connected to VPN.  Everything works fine w/o VPN.

See attachment for error message.  IT department claims all ports are open.  Is this some domain name issue?

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Intel communities!

We have attempted to recreate the problem by using single node both with and without VPN. We were unable to recreate it. To further assist you with this issue, we would appreciate it if you could provide us with the following details:

  • The steps required for recreation
  • The hardware details of your system
  • OS details
  • The no of nodes you are using

Also, as mentioned in your post, we could see the OneAPI version you are using is old. Would you mind testing in the latest version and updating us with the results?

Regards,

Veena

Hi Veena,

This is something a customer is reporting and I cannot reproduce it myself.

They are using Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client - 4.10.  I don't have access that that specific VPN client for testing.  Do you by chance?

Upgrading to a new version of OneAPI will take us weeks of effort that we cannot currently justify.

Can you provide any ideas on how to debug this?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi,

After further investigation on our end, we have identified that the MPI version you are currently using (20151210) is no longer supported. We understand that updates can be challenging, but this step is essential to provide you with the best possible support. we strongly recommend upgrading to the latest version.

To obtain the latest version, please follow this link:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/tools/oneapi/hpc-toolkit-download.html

For Standalone:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/tool/oneapi-standalone-components.html#mpi

In the attached screenshot, the hostname might have changed under the VPN to something different. Could you please try explicitly setting the hostname? This can be done either through the command prompt or via "change adapter settings" in the "Network and Sharing Center." Kindly perform this action and inform us of the results

Veena

This problem remains.  Upgrading MPI isn't an option at this point so we are exploring VPN settings.  Please let me know if you have further suggestions.
