Firmware Update Tool fails on KNL S7200AP due to x2apic?

The update tool kernel panics with

"BIOS has enabled x2apic but kernel doesn't support x2apic, please disable x2apic in BIOS".

The Intel S7200AP server BIOS does not appear to have the option to disable this CPU feature.

I tried adding nox2apic as a kernel boot option, but that did not help either.

Hello Nigel, Thank you so much for contacting us about this concern. I would like to ask you some probing question in order to have a better understanding of the situation and this scenario. Please, provide us more details of this firmware update that you are trying to perform; are you trying to perform the Firmware BIOS Update or a SSD Firmware update? Are you running this update from the EFI or the terminal of a Linux System? Which is the component in which you would like to perform the update? I will be waiting the outcome in order to proceed with the next step. Regards, Emeth O. Intel Customer Support Technician. Under Contract to Intel Corporation.

Hi Emeth, We are using this tool: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28174/Intel-SSD-Firmware-Update-Tool Download Intel® SSD Firmware Update Tool<https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28174/Intel-SSD-Firmware-Update-Tool> This download record installs version 3.0.6 of the Intel® SSD Firmware Update Tool. downloadcenter.intel.com The nodes have Intel DC3510 SSDs installed in them, so we were aiming to update the firmware on the SSDs using the above tool. We have used this tool by booting the ISO on other non-KNL servers without problem. thanks.
