Hi,
Q#1 ----- I just installed Altera-Modelsim starter edition software on ubuntu 12.10 , which is available for download on Altera website. The software platform I am running is ubuntu 12.10. It got installed successfully but I cant launch it. When I go to the "bin" directory in the installation and I launch "./vsim" to run the simulator , I get error related to license. Below is the error. *************************************************************************************** xohaib@zee:~/Downloads/12.1_177_modelsim_ase_linux/linux_installer/modelsim/INSTALL/bin$ ./vsim Unable to find the license file. It appears that your license file environment variable (e.g., LM_LICENSE_FILE) is not set correctly. Unable to checkout a license. Vsim is closing. ** Fatal: Invalid license environment. Application closing. **************************************************************************************** Please help me how to deal with it , as download page says that Modelsim-Altera starter edition does not require a license. Q#2 ----- my second question is related to the difference between Altera-Modelsim and Modelsim PE-student Edition available on Mentor's website. They do not have a download for Linux , but what are the differences between both. Is not it the same product? Thank you very much, zohaibLink Copied

I found some issue installing Modelsim ASE ver 12.1 B177 as well, but the current build ver 12.1sp1 B213 worked fine on Ubuntu 12.04 for me. The environment seems to be setup correctly in the later build.
