I need to install the free software on a Windows XP machine (32 bit).
The latest version requires 64 bit; therefore, I have installed Quartus 13.1 which includes ModelSim-Altera 10.1d. When I try to just open ModelSim directly, it shows the ModelSim image for about 30 seconds and then just disappears.Link Copied

You might try uninstalling modelsim. Then download the 32 bit modelsim installer and run it. Sometimes installers don't figure out your configuration correctly and install the wrong version.

It does work on a 32 bit Windows 7 machine.

Ah, right you are. Check your path environment variable. Make sure it specifies the modelsim you want to use. If not edit it. Also remove any other modelsim mentions in there.
