Quartus II web edition and IP cores

Dear Friends,

I am just now starting to use Quartus and have some questions and hope you can help me here.

I have a Quartus II version 11 web edition and a free Altera ModelSim version.

I was reading about ip cores. Based on the documentation, it seems that with the free(web edition) version, I can use the megacore ips like CIC, FIR, etc and do a simulation with the Open Core/Plus evaluation.

I am just wondering, if my above understanding is correct or not? What issues can I expect or any words of advise from you experienced folks on do's and don'ts for this route.

I know couple of friends, who have a paid version of Quartus and Modelsim, but are having issues/errors in simulating their design with ip cores. They told me that I cannot simulate with the free version, since they cannot simulate with their paid version also, until they buy the ip core license.

Let me know, if you have any suggestions. I am just a beginner.

Thanks.
