Hello,
Could someone help me troubleshoot a System-Console issue? I cannot use it, it crashes at boot.
I have a few version of Quartus and system-console installed on Windows 10.
Everything was working fine, until I installed Quartus 17.1, then all system-console stopped working.

I have tried rebooting the computer multiple times, and re-installing Quartus Programming Tools / System console 22.4. None made a difference.
System-console has been working flawlessly for months until yesterday, the installation of Quartus 17.1

May I know which software that you have installed in the machine?
Like the Quartus version and standalone programmer version installed etc.
Are you using GUI or command line to run the system console? Does the issue exist in both GUI and cmd line?
I am thinking if this could be impacted by the environment setting when Quartus 17.1 was installed.
What happen if you uninstall 17.1 ?
If you install Quartus 22.4, will the issue reoccur?
Best Regards,
Richard Tan

yes, issue exists in both GUI and CMD line.
I have installed Quartus 22.4, rebooted the computer, etc.. Issue still shows.

Hi Richard,
I have re-installed Quartus System Programmer 22.4 today. Still same error.
I have not uninstalled 17.1, this is right now the only System-Console that works on my install. I am afraid to be down to 0 working.

As mentioned, how are your Quartus-related environmental variables set up? You went back to an older version of Quartus where System Console lived in an sopc-builder directory instead of syscon, so your paths may be messed up.

Hi @sstrell ,
see attached Quartus environment variables.
From your post it seems the issue is the order of installation: 21.4 > 17.1 , which could mean that it could get fixed by re-downloading a later version (21.4, 22.4), and installing it?
any easier solution that wouldn't involve 100GB?

@sstrell @RichardTanSY_Intel , 2 questions:
1) How can I fix my installation to be able to run anything else than 17.1? Everything else crashes with
Error: Could not find or load main class com.altera.systemconsole.app.Shell
2) is it possible for both versions to coexist on a computer? Ideally I'd like to be able to have 17.1 and 21.4 to be able to test both simultaneously
Thank you

Is it possible to setup a zoom call or something? This is a blocking item.
I just downloaded Quartus 22.4, and re-installed it. Unfortunately it did not fix the issue, I am still unable to run the system-console 22.4

Sorry for the late reply. I just back from my long holiday.
I try to install qprogrammer standalone for 17.1 pro and 22.4 pro, both able to open "system-console.exe" located at (using GUI with window 10):
C:\intelFPGA_pro\17.1\qprogrammer\sopc_builder\bin
C:\intelFPGA_pro\22.4\qprogrammer\syscon\bin
I will need some time to test out the Quartus Pro installation as it requires a lot of disk space.
At the same time, I will send an email to you for a Team meeting arrangement.
Best Regards,

I consult the engineering team and this should be due to the VC redist package problem.
Try to uninstall VC 2015-2019 first, then install the latest from:

Hi @RichardTanSY_Intel ,
I just tried, it did not work (uninstalled VS 2015-2019 x86 and x64, rebooted, reinstalled from provided source, rebooted again).
I still see the same error messages on any System-Console I am trying to run.

I uninstalled EVERY version of quartus on my computer.
Then re-installed Quartus 22.4 with administrator.
Unfortunately the same exact error message is still there:
C:\intelFPGA_pro\22.4\syscon\bin>system-console.exe
Error - failed to launch '"C:/intelfpga_pro/17.1/quartus/bin64\jre64\bin\java.exe" -Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on "com.altera.systemconsole.app.Shell" '.
Where are these references to 17.1? Everything has been uninstalled, and I confirmed in the Environment Variables everything was gone
