I’m working through “Questa* Intel® FPGA Edition Quick-Start: Intel® Quartus® Prime Standard Edition” tutorial, and I get to the run simulation stage per https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/docs/programmable/703090/21-1/launch-simulation.html - according to the log file, the simulation was spawned:
--------------
Info: Start Nativelink Simulation process
executing command line: ip-make-simscript --nativelink-mode --output-directory=PLL_RAM_iputf_input --spd=C:/FPGA/Quartus_STD_LITE_PLL_RAM/ClockPLL.spd
========= EDA Simulation Settings =====================
Sim Mode : RTL
Family : cyclonev
Quartus root : c:/intelfpga_lite/23.1std/quartus/bin64/
Quartus sim root : c:/intelfpga_lite/23.1std/quartus/eda/sim_lib
Simulation Tool : questa intel fpga
Simulation Language : verilog
Simulation Mode : GUI
Sim Output File :
Sim SDF file :
Sim dir : simulation\questa
=======================================================
Info: Starting NativeLink simulation with Questa Intel FPGA software
Sourced NativeLink script c:/intelfpga_lite/23.1std/quartus/common/tcl/internal/nativelink/modelsim.tcl
Warning: File PLL_RAM_run_msim_rtl_verilog.do already exists - backing up current file as PLL_RAM_run_msim_rtl_verilog.do.bak1
Info: Spawning Questa Intel FPGA Simulation software
Info: NativeLink simulation flow was successful
-------------------
But the Questa GUI does not open, so I can’t go look at the results/waveforms as suggested.
Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Ok, I have sussed it - license failure. Forcing setting the environment variable for the license file in a batch file immediately before launching Quartus seems to make sure Questa can see it. Pity Quartrus just hides the Questa standard output so you never see the error message

I believe you can invoke the Questa standalone software (not through Quartus) to check for any license checkout error message.
