This is a read-only item (pin planner)

Today I decided I needed another 7-segment readout so I went over to the Pin Planner to configure that. I can create the node but it sets the direction to Unknown. Okay, I click on the direction and get a pop-up message "This is a read-only item". Huh? I know I've done this before because I have other pins configured but now I can't change or set the direction of anything. This seems like it ought to be easy but I can't find any reference in the documentation or forums.

I'm running Quartus II v11.1 32-bit on Linux.

I've never set the direction of a pin from the pin planner. Just recompile your project, and if the pin name you defined exists in the design, it will automatically be redefined as an input, an output or a bidirectional.

I knew I must be missing something really obvious. Thanks and my face is a little red now.
