I often get "out of memory" error when compiling in QuartusII 9.1 SP2. It reports the memory usage is 837MB ... :-s

Why does Quartus consume so much of memory? is it normal?

Its quite normal, especially for larger devices.

The minimum requirement for larger arria 2s is 3GB!

There are often many nets to maintain and route.

What Quartus has to say about it. And the pdf linked (http://www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts_dev_support.pdf) with the release notes has what they recommend memory for different target devices.

Thanks guys,

I'm a bit out-dated on this issue. But still, can't appreciate the amount of consumed memory.
