I have an i7 Q740 (2nd gen?) in an 8 year old Toshiba. Time is approaching to buy a new laptop. Do you think that the performance of, say for example, a new i5 would match that of an i7 from 8 years ago? I certainly don't wish to downgrade performance but I've had no complaints with the i7, and it was always sufficient for my medium needs. I'm not a gamer, but a heavy video user. Thanks, any input appreciated.

You have a 1st gen processor from 2010:
Yes, today an i5, whether 8th, 9th, or 10th gen would do you well.
