High temp with i7-860

Just received replacement i7-860 by RMA, and tried stress testing yesterday, the core temp easily went up to 99 degree C within several minutes when Intel Processor Diagnotic Tool started stress testing, below is brief spec of my rig:

CPU: i7-860, no OC, all defaults with stock cooler

Mobo: Gigabyte P55A-UD4P, BIOS F14

RAM: Gskill 2*4G @ DDR3-1600

stress testing tool: latest IPDT (default settings except stress testing time set to 10 mins)

temp monitor tool: Real Temp, latest version

ambient temp: 25 degree C

I stopped the stress testing when one of the core temp reached 99

May I confirm what's the Tj MAX for i7-860?

according to "Thermal/Mechanical Specifications and Design Guidelines" for intel Core i7-800 series (Table 6-2, p38), when ambient temp is below 40 degree C, T case_max should be 72.7 when power goes up to 95, I tried stress testing with my previous CPU when it works, and the max temp should be below 90 degree C. so is it a defective CPU? or a defective fan-heatsink?

The maximum recommended temperature for this processor is 72.7 degrees Celsius, keep in mind that this is the CPU temperature; you do not need to worry about the cores temperature.

The Cores temperature can reach around 110 degrees Celsius and it will be OK.

So basically as long as the CPU temperature does not reach above 72.7 degrees Celsius, the CPU will be running under specifications.

Thanks for your clarification. Following your comments, I have done more testing as below.

Run IPDT stress testing for 10 mins, and monitor the CPU temp using Gigabyte tool EasyTune6 (since RealTemp can only report core temp).

  • Before IPDT started to run, system temp was 35 degree C, and CPU temp was 40 degree C
  • After stress testing started, in 3 to 4 mins CPU temp raised to 81 degree C, but no change to system temp. CPU fan speed increased to around 2070 RPM, and I could hear bit noisy
  • Till end of stress testing, there were no change to CPU temp and system temp

Then I ran IPDT stress testing again for 10 mins, and I can get exactly the same result using AIDA64 to monitor CPU temp/system temp

Below is IPDT result saved after one try
