I have a need to running virtual machines from my laptop which processor would be best suited ,I was told that the quad core 6820 hv was better for purpose than the dual core 6600u ,if so what would be the difference apart from the obvious

I could not find an i7-6820hv. I did do a compare of these three:

If you are thinking of upgrading your laptop, you can stop now. All three of the above processors use a BGA socket, which means the processor is soldered to the motherboard.

If you are looking to purchase a laptop with one of these processors, all three offer VT-x, VT-D, and VT-x with EPT. And, all three are in the same price range.
