NUC7PJYHN with Windows 11 running at a crawl

Hi, I have a NUC7PJYHN running Windows 11. It's working, but the computer is running at a very slow speed. I understand that the NUC7PJYHN is a little dated and that the CPU is not the most powerful, but it seems unreasonably slow to me. Maybe some configuration or some drivers are a little off and affect the performance. I have two questions:

  • What would be the best way to benchmark my machine in order to quantify this (potential) issue? What performance can I reasonably expect?
  • What settings and what drivers are most likely be responsible for this? What should I look for?

Thanks a lot for your help!

You are running windows 11 home, correct?

If so, I would imagine you are running at about 10-12% cpu time when idle, correct?

Hi AlHill,

Thanks a lot for your response!

Yes, it's Windows 11 Home. How do I check the CPU usage %?

You can use task manager.

Also, what is your processor model number?

Hi AlHill,

Thank you very much for your response!

According to the Task Manager, the CPU usage is varying between 20% and 30%, with no other applications open.

The CPU is Intel Pentium Silver J5040 at 2.00GHz. The system has 8GB or RAM.

Greetings,

I think you should worry first about potential sources for a slowing of performance. I would be looking at how much of the time the processor's performance is being throttled due to over-temperature, over-power, etc. conditions. There are a number of tools that you could use to investigate whether throttling is occurring. One that would also provide a benchmarking capability is AIDA64. They have a 30-day try-now trial that you could use to perform this investigation without having to purchase the tool.

Hope this helps,

Hi n_scott_pearson,

Thank you very much for your response!

I have downloaded and installed the trial version of AIDA64 Extreme v7. It seems to have a lot of benchmarking features. Which tests do I need to run to find out about throttling and over-temperature?

Well, I would start with the System Stability Test. It gives you an indication of temperatures and whether there is any throttling going on. You could also use the Cache and Memory Benchmark tests as well,
