NUC7PJYHN with Windows 11 running at a crawl

Hi, I have a NUC7PJYHN running Windows 11. It's working, but the computer is running at a very slow speed. I understand that the NUC7PJYHN is a little dated and that the CPU is not the most powerful, but it seems unreasonably slow to me. Maybe some configuration or some drivers are a little off and affect the performance. I have two questions:

  • What would be the best way to benchmark my machine in order to quantify this (potential) issue? What performance can I reasonably expect?
  • What settings and what drivers are most likely be responsible for this? What should I look for?

Thanks a lot for your help!

You are running windows 11 home, correct?

If so, I would imagine you are running at about 10-12% cpu time when idle, correct?

Hi AlHill,

Thanks a lot for your response!

Yes, it's Windows 11 Home. How do I check the CPU usage %?

Greetings,

Hans

You can use task manager.

Also, what is your processor model number?

Hi AlHill,

Thank you very much for your response!

According to the Task Manager, the CPU usage is varying between 20% and 30%, with no other applications open.

The CPU is Intel Pentium Silver J5040 at 2.00GHz. The system has 8GB or RAM.

Greetings,

I think you should worry first about potential sources for a slowing of performance. I would be looking at how much of the time the processor's performance is being throttled due to over-temperature, over-power, etc. conditions. There are a number of tools that you could use to investigate whether throttling is occurring. One that would also provide a benchmarking capability is AIDA64. They have a 30-day try-now trial that you could use to perform this investigation without having to purchase the tool.

Hope this helps,

Hi n_scott_pearson,

Thank you very much for your response!

I have downloaded and installed the trial version of AIDA64 Extreme v7. It seems to have a lot of benchmarking features. Which tests do I need to run to find out about throttling and over-temperature?

Greetings,

Hans

Well, I would start with the System Stability Test. It gives you an indication of temperatures and whether there is any throttling going on. You could also use the Cache and Memory Benchmark tests as well,

Thank you very much! I'm attaching screenshots of the System Stability Test and the Cache and Memory Benchmark.

According to the System Stability Test, the CPU Usage is ~20% when the test is not running (before pressing 'Start' and after pressing 'Stop'), and goes up to 100% when it is (after pressing 'Start'). The time axis is a bit confusing; in the upper panel that shows the various temperatures, start and stop is indicated by vertical dashed lines; in the lower panel it's only visible by the sudden jump in CPU Usage, and the two axes are not aligned.

The only program that's running next to AIDA64 is Teamviewer, apart from that the system is idle.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I am confused by what I am seeing. The Usage graph seems to be out of sync with the Temperature graph. Please run Stability test again - close the Stability test window, open it again, click on Clear, then Start, wait 5-10 minutes, and then click on Stop.

One of the big things I wanted to see was whether or not any throttling is occurring. If any occurs, where it says CPU Throttling in green will change to red, and it will tell you the percentage of time that was spent throttling. Staying green is the goal, obviously.
