PGA988 and FCPGA988

Hi. I have laptop which has i3-370m processor and i find a cheap i3-3110m and i want to upgrade. But my laptop's cpu socket is PGA988 and i3 3110m has FCPGA988. Can i upgrade it. Thanks.

Not a chance. You can upgrade within the processor generation, but not across multiple generations like that. The i3-370m is a 1st generation Core processor while the i3-3110M is a 3rd generation Core processor. The issue is having a matching chipset. The i3-370M processor requires a 5 Series Mobile chipset. The i3-3110M, on the other hand, requires either a 6 Series or a 7 Series Mobile chipset.

Now, any upgrade processor that you might consider has to be properly supported by the Management Engine and BIOS firmware. In a nutshell, you must have board, socket and BIOS compatibility for the new processor. In addition, if the processor is soldered down to the laptop's motherboard, you aren't changing it at all.

Thanks for reply. I understand what do you want to say but i found a list about "Processors (CPU) that will fit Intel HM55 motherboard socket rPGA 988A / B / Socket G1 / G2" (https://www.game-debate.com/motherboard/index.php?mot_id=92&cpuList=Intel) and it says that is possible. 1st gen cpu's graphic card is Intel® HD Graphics for Previous Generation Intel® Processors but this card cannot support the programs i use. Is this upgrade impossible? Thanks for reply again.

I don't believe so, but I have been proven wrong before. In my mind, there is little chance that the ME and BIOS firmware in this laptop will fully and properly support a two-gens-later processor.
