The Intel i7-14700K processor reaches 100-104°C when running heavy tasks.

The Intel i7-14700K processor reaches 100-104°C when running heavy tasks, such as packaging/compiling games in Unreal engine, building shaders in games such as Marvel Rivals or The Finals, or running the Cinebench 2024 benchmark. In Cinebench the CPU ends up thermal throttling about 20-30% of the time.

My case has good cooling, 5 case fans and a DeepCool AK620 Digital CPU fan rated for 260TDP (https://www.deepcool.com/ProductCompatibilityS_New/Default.aspx?id=undefined).
I use HWinfo64 to read the temperature of the CPU.
My bios is using the default settings (ie, "Intel default settings").

Is there a problem with my CPU unit?

Hello TeddyIsConfused,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. It seems like the temperatures you're experiencing during heavy tasks are unusual. To assist you better, I have a few questions that will help us diagnose the issue more effectively. Please provide answers to the following:

  1. What is the full make and model of your motherboard? Additionally, please include your current BIOS version.
  2. What type of thermal paste are you currently using? The quality and application of thermal paste can significantly affect cooling performance.
  3. Is your PC located in a warm environment? Ambient temperature can impact your system's cooling efficiency.
  4. Have there been any recent software changes? If so, have you tried reverting to default settings to see if that resolves the issue?
  5. Have you tried using a different CPU cooler for testing?
  6. Have you tried overclocking your processor, either in the BIOS or through an application? If so, could you please provide the name of the application? Please note that if the system was overclocked, including voltage/frequency beyond the processor's supported specifications, it may void the warranty.

Best regards,

Hi,

1. The motherboard is Asus ROG STRIX B760-I GAMING WiFi (https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b760-i-gaming-wifi-model/).
BIOS version is 1805.

2. I use the stock thermal paste included with my DeepCool AK620 CPU Fan (https://www.deepcool.com/products/Cooling/cpuaircoolers/AK620-Digital-Performance-CPU-Cooler-With-Status-Display-1851-1700-AM5/2024/17202.shtml).
I've applied a good amount of thermal paste so I am sure it will have spread out properly.

3. The ambient temperature is around 22-24 degree Celsius. My case is a Fractal Design Meshify 2 Nano which has plenty of airflow, I have 5 case fans for extra cooling and nothing is obscuring the air intake nor the air outtake.

4. No, I haven't had any recent software changes, the CPU has been behaving the same since I got it.

5. I don't own any other CPU coolers, thus I can not test a different cooler.

6. I have not done any overclocking. When I built my computer I updated to the newest bios and reset the bios settings to the defaults.

Hello TeddyIsConfused,

Thank you for providing the information. I have a few additional questions and a recommendation for you to consider:

  • Has this issue occurred before, or is this the first time you are experiencing it?
  • Is your system newly built, or has it been in use for some time?

Based on my research, the thermal throttling of your Intel Core i7-14700K on the Asus ROG STRIX B760-I motherboard might be related to the motherboard's power delivery capabilities. The 14700K processor requires more power, and using a motherboard with lower power delivery capabilities can lead to current/EDP throttling, even if the current limits are set to the maximum.

Could you test your processor with a Z-series motherboard? You might be able to borrow one from a friend or test it at a nearby shop. This could help determine if the motherboard is the cause of the throttling issue.

I managed to fully assemble the computer in January. The issue with exceeding 100 degrees Celsius is something I first noticed last month (February).

"Based on my research, the thermal throttling of your Intel Core i7-14700K on the Asus ROG STRIX B760-I motherboard might be related to the motherboard's power delivery capabilities."
Is it possible to double check that this is an issue using a monitoring software such as HWInfo?

"Could you test your processor with a Z-series motherboard?"
No, sorry, my friends computers don't have a matching socket. I also don't know of any stores that provide this service.

Hi TeddyIsConfused,

While I can't guarantee results with HWinfo, as it's a third-party application, I recommend conducting a stress test using Intel Extreme Utility for about 30 minutes. During the test, please click the yellow "File Logging" button located in the middle right corner. This will record all the data into an Excel file. Once the stress test is complete, press the button again to stop the recording, and then click the folder icon to locate the saved file. Please send this file to this thread so I can examine it further. You can refer to the image below for guidance.

Hi again, thank you for your reply. Which options do you want me to select for the stress test? (See the attached image)

Best regards Teddy.

Hi TeddyIsConfused,

Please conduct a CPU stress test the first choice, for about 30 minutes. Once completed, send the results in this thread, and I will examine them. Thank you.

Here is my result from running the CPU stress test. I have attached the csv file.

Just as a reference, I also tried starting the logger while building the light of my game in Unreal Engine. I attached the log file from Intel XTU and a screenshot of HWinfo that was running in the background.
