2 days ago, I attempted to boot my desktop and it just went into a power cycling loop. Nothing was being displayed on the screen and it would just turn off and back on after 8 seconds. Taking away any extra cards didn't help the situation. Using a G4400 from a friend I was able to confirm that it was just that my 6600k simply stopped working. It's not even overclocked.
Is this common? What can I do to prevent this in the future?

Hello Snickerdoodle,
Thank you for joining the Processors community.
It is not common; however, it could have been just a faulty unit and this is one of the reason why boxed processors typically carry an Intel three-year warranty. My apologies for any inconvenience.
Regards,
Amy.
