I have an i3 4370 using the stock fan. Idle temps are in the mid 30's C, but testing with Prime 95, they immediately jumped to the high 70's C, got as high as 85 C before I stopped it. I took out the fan, reapplied new thermal paste and re-installed the fan. Idle temp were a few degrees cooler, but the full load still got in the high 70's.
That normal for this processor?

High temperatures can be expected if the processor is running Prime 95 SMALL FFT Torture Test because it makes extensive use of the new AVX instructions, which require additional voltage and will therefore generate more heat.

Would an aftermarket cooler bring down the temps?

It may, however, we do not consider an aftermarket fan/heatsink necessary since:
- The processor is not expected to go through such constant and heavy processing as we do not know of any application that stresses the processor as the Small FFT Torture Test does; therefore, it is not a realistic test.
- The stock Intel fan/heatsink should cover the thermal requirements of the processor in normal conditions.
