If i write my own Controller core / Buy an controller IP for CF , can i use the CF Slot to access a custom

CF interfaced sensor chip that i have in other (than IDE/ATA) modes.

or is there some board limitation due to dedicated connections which restrict the CF Interface to only ATA and IDE modes.
