Greetings --
The subject says it all. Hello, my name is David, and... and... and I am an FPGA user. I can't help it, I just do. I'm on the Nios team here at Altera, and I'll be dropping in from time to time to attempt to be helpful. Also, I wanted to be the first to post here. Carry on. -- dvbLink Copied

Hello,
I am a very happy Nios/Cyclone hardware/software do-it-all kinda guy. I've created a custom board modeled around the excellent development kit reference design for our product's "brain". dvb: I must say that I have had many, many laughs from your comments deep within the Nios SDK code. Thanks for making my project quite enjoyable! -Tim- Mark as New

Tim,
Is your board a new type of development kit, or is it for a custom application? Beach (an Altera employee who cares about devkits)..- Mark as New

Beach,
Our board is for a proprietary application. The devkit was very helpful in getting our project up and running -- especially the configuration section using the MAX7000A + flash, safe and user images, etc. I used the same SRAM, SDRAM, FLASH, and Ethernet chip too. The ethernet is on a separate bus however because my application is very network intensive and I'm using a fast HDL UDP layer. -Tim- Mark as New

Greetings,
Another Nios team member here. I'll try to drop by from time to time to sample the cool things going on, and maybe answer a question or two. PS: To see why I chose my nickname, have a look at this fine presentation a few university students did concerning Nios (http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ee545/s03/01/dr3.pdf).- Mark as New

Well, since everyone is being so cordial, I thought I'd say "Hi".
I'm a hardware engineer here at Altera and designed the Nios II CPU cores. I'll pop in here from time-to-time to see what's brewing. I'm doing this on my own time but hope to be able to answer some Nios II CPU hardware-related questions (e.g. caches, pipelines), issues about processor performance, or low-level software issues (e.g. interrupts, device drivers). I'd really be interested to hear from users about which Nios II CPU configuration they are using and issues related to the processor. I'd also like to hear about any new features you might want to see added to future Nios II CPU releases.- Mark as New

Hullo and greetings from London, Ontario!
I'm glad to see so many Altera faces in here... heck, even some that I recognize. http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I'm one of the software developers currently working on the Nios II Linux project here at Microtronix. I expect to stop in every once in a while to see what's going on and possibly to answer questions. We'll see what my schedule permits. Take care all, Ken.- Mark as New

Hi,
I'm Alan, and I'm also on the Nios/Nios II team in Santa Cruz. I'm here to help as well, but I'm particularly interested in collecting feedback on Nios II in order to plan the road map of the product. Feel free to let me know how you are using Nios II, how you would like to use Nios II, or what new features/tools/etc. you'd like to see in future releases of the Nios II development kits. Thanks, Alan- Mark as New

Hey Folks,
Ed here, new to NIOS. I'm exploring NIOS as a replacement for all the microcontrollers I use (rabbit, 80xx, etc). Will be using the Cyclone. First job, integrate the NIOS with all kinds of custom peripherals. I've gotten good at VHDL and have some Altera product experience. (quartus rocks).- Mark as New

Hi, Greetings from Germany!
Hope I mustn't be an ALTERA employee to say hi. I'm a NIOS user from the first beginning (since NIOS v1.0!) and have done my one designs based on the old APEX devkit. Actually I'm doing a design with CYCLONE and "all on chip" NIOS. Had my ups and downs with the ALTERA Software. But overall the NIOS system is a very flexible stuff - I like it. http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I'm looking here from time to time what's going on to get some helpfull hint (or maybe to share some experiences with other NIOS guys). Regards, mschulz.- Mark as New

Hello all!
I've been an Altera NIOS designer since it came out. My small consulting business has done well with the whole Altera line. And yes... Quartus ROCKS & MaxPlus Sucks. Sorry, I just had to say it. Michael L. Hasenfratz Hasenfratz & Associates I speak only for myself. My company does enough on it's own.- Mark as New

Hi everybody, new NIOS user from Chicago here.
Some experience with Cyclone FPGA but no with NIOS - just started to learn about it. I have many years of software experience but now I am more a hardware kinda guy. Mostly in digital/FPGA arena. Greetings to all. http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif- Mark as New

Hello!
I'm an old-time Altera user from way back; I started with the EPM5000 series parts and MaxPlus II 2.something way back in 1992. Moved to MAX7000s, then wrote software for a few years, then got back into the saddle with Quartus on an Apex 20KE a couple years ago, and now I'm on Cyclones. It's been a ride. My projects are defense-related, so please understand that I have to be vague at times... I've used AHDL for all that up until a couple months ago when I learned Verilog. VHDL left a bad taste in my mouth back when I used it in school, so any suggestion that I dump Verilog for VHDL will be met with hearty laughter and a slap on the back. Now I'm just waiting for Altera to finish supporting Verilog 2001; the lack of support for multidimensional arrays and vectors of modules kinda cripples my preferred (heavily-parameterized) coding style... Right now, I'm waiting for my Nios II update. They say a Nios II/e will take about 20% of my EP1C3; the Nios-16 I have in there now takes 50% (granted, that includes peripherals, but still...). I'll believe it when I see it, of course. And thanks for Nios. It was well worth the look on my coworker's face when I told him that I smashed a couple PWM generators, ADC controllers, DDR serial controllers, FIFOs, and the microcontroller that runs the show into the aforementioned Cyclone and still had room left... Have fun!
