If you find it useful, take a look at the FIFO example distributed here (
http://www.evidence.eu.com/nios2/literature.asp).
Basically you can implement the same behavior in a more flexible way without becoming crazy with a lot of mailboxes and onchip memories...

out of curiosity... what is your application about? how did hoy chose the partitiong of your application in four CPUs?
