bootstrap compiler

I don't know if it is the correct section of the forum for that question. 

 

I have one question about the cross-compiling toolchain. 

It is said in each documentation that we must create a bootstrap compiler then compile the c library then compile the full gcc compiler. 

I wonder why we need the bootstrap compiler ?
