After upgrading to Nios II Release 5.0 (from 1.1) the read access time
for the epcs controller appears significantly slower -- about 5x slower. Did something change? Has anyone else observed this? --ScottLink Copied

I noticed the same thing. I just went from 4.1 to 5.0, and noticed the u-boot 'epcs info' feature was much slower. I believe the EPCS component HW & SW was changed in 4.2 to use less resources (register went from offset 0x400 to offset 0x200), but I didn't use 4.2 so I don't know if the slowdown coincided with this change.

Hi tns1,
Ok, so I'm not going crazy then ... at least not for the moment ;-) I compared the speed using the u-boot epcs read command of about 128 KB. It went from about 1 sec to more than 5 sec -- I'll have to take a closer look. Maybe altera support will turn something up. Thanks, --Scott- Mark as New

Ok, I found a previous discussion:

..discussed in that other thread but I'll just re-iterate here: This was a problem fixed in Nios II 5.0 s.ervice pack 1 (just released). The other thread discusses workarounds for 5.0 users.
When you get your 5.0 SP1 update installed, you may need to open SOPC Builder, delete,. and then re-add the EPCS peripheral to your system. After a subsequent HW compilation all should be well.
