so at the environment of quartus 2,how can I change to "software mode"?

I don't know if I've understood your questions, but I try to help you:
You first have to make a design with the SOPC builder, then you compile your system. And then you can launch the NIOS II IDE (maybe what you call the "software mode") to code on your system. Good luck.- Mark as New

Thank you very much for your help!! but in fact I don't want to code in the IDE,I just want to lanch the ESS from the quartus 2, to make a simulation.
It's right that I have simulate(Debug as Nios 2 Instruction set simulatoe) my project in the IDE,I just can't get the difference between the simulation in the IDE and that using the ESS. Is it right that if I simulate my project in the IDE and I have not to do the same thing in the ESS? Or the ESS is a advanced tool for us to simulate our project and we can get a better simulation if we us it ?
