Dear Intel, do you have to be unfair ?

Dear Intel,

A while ago I bought the best Intel SKU of its time (13900K), and I put a lot of effort -- and money -- into my build to make it just right !

And then it hit me: Intel completely disabled access to AVX-512 instructions for my sample !

So I find on google that some lucky few, with this SKU, were still able to access AVX-512, but not everyone could ?

I mean Intel has a large marketing department, and marketing budget. Surely you know how frustrating and unfair if feels when someone else with the same CPU has access to the instruction set, but I do not !

And if AVX-512 was included in the previous generation (11900K, 12900K), how did Intel decide to remove it in the new generation (13900) ? What ? Is it ok now for Intel to frustrate individual customers, on purpose ? Are these individuals still buying CPUs so insignificant for Intel now ?

What product manager at Intel was negligent enough and disconnected enough from the users, to make the decision that blocking AVX-512 is the right thing to do ? After AVX-512 already got out on the market ?

I know AVX-512 is only accessible with the right motherboard settings in the UEFI. And if my motherboard allows me to enable the instruction set, why does Intel still try to disable it retroactively ? Maybe this problem is only true for 12th gen to be fair (God knows anymore what Intel did with this feature), but I mean if I bought the CPU, it is already my property, payed for and no longer Intel property, why does Intel still change the feature set ? How does Intel remotely decide to cut this feature, and downgrade the CPU with a new firmware .... ! How is that legal ?

And Intel marketing never even tried to justify disabling AVX-512 instructions. All they said is they have data center CPUs that still support AVX-512 ... But I am not a data center, Intel ! Like it is obvious 12900K and 13900K are consumer CPUs, according to Intel marketing directly. Remember the equivalent CPUs from competition still have AVX-512, and for consumers, not data centers !

And to make this worse, Intel developed a sorting library based on AVX-512,  and it works 10 times faster then without AVX-512, and the library was quickly adopted by numpy (in python) and other open-source.

So Intel is just adding insult to injury now, at least least this is how it feels. I know the public Intel financials are in general a multi-year decline (and at least they say it is according to plan), but Intel: maybe you actually deserve it, seeing how you disrespect individual customers ... ?

So how did I even get here ? I wanted to support Intel Arc and bought the best SKU from Intel (from another country, mind you -- because a true global Arc release was too hard for Intel ?). And then I wanted an Intel platform to match my new Intel GPU ... and the disabled AVX-512 then hit me

So where is my AVX-512 CPU, Intel ?

Yes, I know only P-cores have AVX-512. The article pretty much copies Intel marketing.

I would not disable E-cores for day-to-day use, but remember E-cores were even detrimental to gaming, at least after launch. I never checked again later and I am sure Intel had to do something it. The point is there are some use cases even for using the P-cores alone.

The question remains: why is Intel disabling AVX-512 from the P-cores ?

I mean picture this: the instruction set already takes up the space on the silicon. It has been implemented, and is now working (some people can enable it)! And Intel is just ... denying everyone else access. Again, sometimes they did this retroactively with a microcode update.

Corporate greed alone does not explain this either: does Intel imagine they are somehow pushing individual customers into buying data center and server CPUs  ?  How does that work ?

Hello Adrian_Vasile_C_

Thank you for posting on the Intel Communities. We are sorry that you are experiencing issues with your processor not having AVX -512 instructions.

We want to let you know that AVX-512 will be fused off on Alder Lake mobile products and most desktop products. Although AVX-512 was not fuse-disabled on certain early Alder Lake desktop products, Intel plans to fuse off AVX-512 on Alder Lake products going forward.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Best Regards,

How can Intel do this ?

Why should some people (with the early units) have the feature, and not the others ? They all got the same product from Intel...

And why is Intel disabling AVX-512 after motherboards implemented the option to enable it ? So the boards are left with options that will never work again ... ?

Hello Adrian_Vasile_C_,

Thanks for your patience. In this case, I would like to let you know that different processors have different capabilities. Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (Intel AVX-512) instruction set in 3rd Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors; however, there are some previous core generations that contain the feature.

You can have more information about the Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (Intel AVX-512) in the following links:
