Hyper-threading reaching maximum and freeze

I have Intel Core i7 -5960X 8 Core i7 CPU.

It has 8 physical cores and 8 hyper threading.

Past year my computer is very randomly freezing.

All other cores are maintaining around 30%,

but 2~3 hyper thread cores are reaching maximum and freeze little bit and drop s down.

It really bothers me when I play games or watch video it freezes computer like 1~3 secs (with audio freeze too).

It happens randomly but i'll say 1~2 times in 1 minute

Is any way to fix this problem?

I have Asus X99-Deluxe motherboard, 16gb ddr4, 512 SSD.

I tried swipe memory, ssd. only thing I havent done is change motherboard or cpu. I reapply thermal paste to CPU.

Hello CPark42,

Thank you for posting on this Intel Community.

Your computer can become unresponsive due to external devices connected to it, faulty hardware or drivers, or recently installed software.

  • First, we would like to gather more information about your computer (OS version, graphics driver version, etc.). Please run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) and attach the report to this thread.

1. Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application in your computer.

2. Open the application and click "Scan" to see system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".

3. To save your scan, click Next and click Save.

  • Also, please let us know if the issue occurs when you watch local or online videos.

Hi, Please see attached scanned file.

It happens when I turn on my computer. I believe first 1~2 hrs are very noticeable.

Not only when I play video, even software, mouse curse freeze time to time.

duration is around 2~3 sec.

Hello CPark42,

Thank you for your response.

Based on the report attached, the processor is working as expected and it is healthy.

For example:

Temperature

Current Junction Temperature is 50C

Current Degrees Below Max    44C

Maximum Target Temp Allowed 94C

Test Result - PASS

Expected Greater than 1 degrees below max

Received 44 degrees below max

Test PASSED

Frequency is working as expected:

Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5960X CPU @ 3.00GHz

Expected CPU Frequency: 3.00

Detected CPU Frequency: 3.34797

Expected Base Clock: 100

Detected Base Clock: 101.454

This does not seem to be a processor issue. Please follow these recommendations to continue troubleshooting this problem:

  • Check for firmware and drivers from your PC manufacturer. It is really important to install the available updates.
  • Are you running the latest drivers for your graphics card? NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
  • We noticed that you have BIOS version 1702. There have been many firmware releases that may fix the issue you are having and improve system stability.

Version 3902 (Latest)

X99-DELUXE Downloads

Note: Since installing BIOS firmware is risky, we recommend contacting your motherboard manufacturer before performing a BIOS update.

  • Have you scanned your system for malware? This could also cause hangs and performance issues in Windows*.
