My i7 6700k is overheating / not performing well.

I just recently (this past december) got a brand new i7 6700k processor and it is overheating a bit. I mentioned it to a friend and he said that he went on the forums here and got help with his Extreme Tuning Utility settings making his processor work how it should.

I have the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility downloaded already, and I was wondering if someone could help me make the settings fit my build so I don't cause long term heat damage.

The processor maxes out around 70 C on idle. Even more when I am streaming / heavy processes. Another problem I had was my ram would max out when I streamed and played Overwatch, but my computer is pretty beefy, it should be able to handle streaming Overwatch 720p 60fps with 16gb of ddr4 ram.

I attached screenshots of my Tuning settings, keep in mind they are all default. All my specs should be posted in there too.

Keep in mind, I am running Minecraft and Teamspeak while those screenshots were taken. So that CPU percentage was not an idle percentage. But the temperature does not change even when I am idle.

In regard to your inquiry, we actually recommend to use the PC at stock or default configuration to avoid any kind of performance problems. The T-case temperature of the processor is 64°C, so if it is reaching 70°C it seems to be that it is getting overheated. The proper memory RAM for the processor should be DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V, please make sure you are using the correct memory:

In order to try to fix this problem we can try a BIOS update, also to confirm if in fact the processor is overheating, we can run the Intel® processor diagnostics tool, it does an overall test on the processor, including a temperature test, so if it passed it should be fine:

If in fact the PC is getting overheated, it will start to throttle, getting freeze and eventually it will go off by itself.

 

 

Do you have the option to test your board with a different processor, or test your processor on a different board? This is because the problem could be related to any of those components.

 

 

Remember the Intel warranty on the processor is for 3 years.

I passed the diagnostics tool with no problems at all. I went ahead and bought a new Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooler which is doing me great. It keeps the temps down to 37 C average. I do believe the main problem was from a MSI game boost setting that was default. It made my CPU overclock to 4.4 ghz to improve my gameplay. If there are any other recommendations feel free to let me know so I can make sure my gaming PC is in the best shape.

Actually, if the temperature is running at 37 °C average that is pretty good, the PC should work with no problems that way.

Hey, I was wondering what the process would be to get a new processor. What requirements are there for a replacement and how soon could I get it? I just ran a benchmark on my PC and saw that my i7 6700k was performing way below the average percentile, compared to 112,883 other benchmarks (using the same processor). Could I go ahead and ask to use my warranty and receive a new one? I have had problems with it since day one and I am starting to believe it is the root of all my problems currently.

The benchmark is telling you that you have 20% background cpu usage so the test is only getting 80%, looks like with that taken into consideration your results are normal.
