xeon W-2135 turbofrequencies?

Hello,

I would like to know the "proper" turbo frequencies on Intel Xeon W-2135. I.e load with 1 core, 2 cores, 3 cores etc.

We are running RHEL7 and measure the turbo frequencies with turbostat command.

Load looks as below for now, but is this according to spec?

1 cores: 4500!!! 4500!!!

2 cores: 4500!!! 4500!!!

3 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

4 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

5 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

6 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

Thanks in advance!

Hello flood,

For Maximum Turbo Frequencies for Xeon W-2135, can be found on Intel Ark page:

https://ark.intel.com/products/126709/Intel-Xeon-W-2135-Processor-8-25M-Cache-3-70-GHz- https://ark.intel.com/products/126709/Intel-Xeon-W-2135-Processor-8-25M-Cache-3-70-GHz-, which is 4.50GHz

Or additional information can be found on the following page for other models:

I hope this information helps.

Or if you require it for specific modes, please provide me with the model numbers.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Hello Henry,

Thank you for your reply.

what confuses me is that the scaling on "i7-8700K" processor produces the below results when multiple cores are under heavy load.

1 cores: 4700!!! 4700!!!

2 cores: 4600!!! 4600!!!

3 cores: 4500!!! 4500!!!

4 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

5 cores: 4400!!! 4400!!!

6 cores: 4300!!! 4300!!!

I am expecting similar results on Xeon w-2135, but my assumptions may be wrong.

Do you know if the Xeon w-2135 _only_ targets 3.7GHz (the base frequency) when multiple cores are put on heavy load?

Then maybe this is expected behavior.

Thanks in advance!

/best regards

Mikael

Hello flood,

I truly understand the confusing between i7-8700K and Xeon-W-2135.

But both process will reach the Max Turbo Frequencies differently.

It depends on the motherboard BIOS to enable all options on the CPU.

It is critical to understand that performance is not just about the number of cores or frequency speed, it is based upon the entire infrastructure that helps transfer data to where it is needed in a high-performance PC, when it is needed, so that it can be transformed into actionable information in the shortest amount of time.

You can find additional information on Google (Xeon vs i7).

Also, what benchmark or test software are you using to the get Max Turbo Frequencies.

And what hardware configuration uses on each CPU.

I hope this information helps.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Hey Henry,

Sorry for the delay. We discovered that it is likely a OS or bios configuration causing these unpredictable CPU frequencies during load.

> Also, what benchmark or test software are you using to the get Max Turbo Frequencies.

Various shell commands to provoke load to each individual core, and then we measure the frequency with turbostat (turbostat - Report processor frequency and idle statistics).

The commands are basically emulating load for production.

> And what hardware configuration uses on each CPU.

The motherboard is supermicro

https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C420/X11SRM-F.cfm X11SRM-F | Motherboards | Products - Super Micro Computer, Inc.

Probably we need to look into the bios configuration more.

The default setting (and our current) are as

Speedstep PSD Function (Pstates) Enable

EIST PSD Function HW_ALL

Turbo Mode Enable

Which basically should let the OS (Red hat) query the hardware to adjust frequencies and then let the hardware make a decision.

Thank you for baring with me.

/best regards
