de2 vs. de2-115 for student studying computer vision

I have read through the specs but I am not far enough along in my learning to know whether the DE2 is plenty enough for my needs to pursue computer vision, animation rendering and other random projects etc. or for that 30 extra dollars should I go for the de2-115 which would be a no brainer EXCEPT that I find the ability to power the de2 board via USB VERY important/desirable...Can the de2 power multimedia hsmc cards, the touch panel modules, the 5mp camera and others? In short what is the sort of projects a de2-115 would be able to fulfill that the de2 would not. Or would it just be the performance of the projects. Examples would be appreciated. Thank you for your response or pointing me to an appropriate thread.

The tPAD/VEEK is a DE2-115 plus a display

So that gives you an idea of what the DE-115 can power.

You cannot power any of the DE boards from USB. They all need external power cables.

Thanks for your response. Pretty sure the Altera de2 Cyclone 2 board can be powered by USB. Cant find a source but this is what we use in our lab.

I have a DE2, DE2-70, and DE2-115/VEEK. They all need power cables. All of these boards require more than 500mA.

The DE0-nano is powered from USB. Perhaps that is what you are thinking of.

Dave

Ok, Sorry for my confusion then.

If you know where to find that chart that shows all the different boards and shows the features of each side by side please let me know. They are separated into 3 different pages, low, middle, and high cost/performance.

I saw it once and haven't been able to find it since.

Thanks

I don't recall such a chart. Perhaps it was on the university program site:

http://www.altera.com/education/univ/materials/boards/unv-dev-edu-boards.html

or Terasic's site

http://www.terasic.com.tw/en/

Arrow had a document with all the Altera boards

This PDF is pretty good. It might not be the table you were thinking of, but it'll have the info you're looking for.

Dave
