Asrock z790 RS Pro + 13th Gen i3 13100

2x WD NVME in raid 1

Raid Drivers tested (SetupRST) = 18.7.6.1010 / 19.5.7.1058 (From Asrock) / 19.5.8.1059.2

Windows 11 pro 24H2

Memory = Crucial (64GB)

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Application - opens fine and works with no VHD (from a file) mounted.

As soon as a VHD is mounted the App fails to open with either 0xA0080000 or 0xA00906B3 errors ( tested with VHD file on raid and none raid sata ACHI drive )

I have tried uninstall and reinstall and the following links

Thank you for reply

The PC was only built this week. So no changes to note.

I have updated Bios.

I have tried restarting the service but it fails to start while the VDH is mounted.

I have moved the VHD to a none raid drive.

The VHD is bitlocked  , so have tried with and without passkey - but it fails to open as soon as its mounted.

The management app works perfectly until a VHD is mounted once mounted it will not open.

Once the VHD is unmounted the management app does not work until the PC is rebooted and works perfect until the VHD is mounted again.

Edit 1

Just did a bit more playing

1 - Once the VHD is unmounted and the Intel Storage Middleware Service is restarted the management app opens.

2 - If the management app is open and visible when the VHD  is mounted the app works !!

It looks like mounting a VHD terminates the Intel Middleware Service If the app is not open.

Hi PaulN,

Thank you for providing detailed information about the issues you're experiencing with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) application. I understand how challenging it can be to deal with these errors, especially when working with VHD files, and I'm here to assist you in resolving this matter.

Based on your observations, it seems that mounting a VHD terminates the Intel Middleware Service, causing the management app to fail. I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting and sharing the event logs, which provide valuable insights into the issue.

I am currently checking internally to gather more information and potential solutions for this problem. I will get back to you as soon as more information becomes available. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or need further assistance in the meantime, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Best regards,

Hi PaulN,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issues you're experiencing with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) and the VHD file. To better assist you, I would appreciate some clarification on your system setup and objectives.

Could you please clarify how your system is configured? Specifically, is the Intel RST installed on the host operating system or within a guest operating system?

Host Operating System: This is the primary operating system running directly on your computer's hardware. It manages the system's resources and provides the environment for applications to run. Intel RST typically operates within the host OS to manage physical drives and storage configurations.

Guest Operating System: This is an OS running within a virtual machine (VM) on top of the host OS. It operates independently and can have its own applications and settings. If Intel RST is installed in a guest OS, it may have different capabilities or limitations compared to being installed on the host OS.

What is your goal with the VHD file being used with Intel RST? Are you using it to help manage VHDs on your system, or is your intention to use the Intel RST application to manage your drives as a whole?

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated, and understanding these details will help us provide more targeted support. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Best regards,

Intel RST installed on 2 1TB NVME drives raid 1

This has the OS ( Win 11 Pro ) on the "C" and a data drive "D" neither are bitlocked.

The VHD is a 8GB bitlocked file that when mounted with windows disk manager and becomes drive "B" ( Management crashes after this is mounted ) and contains some sensitive work data. (Not attached to a VM)

I have 4 Sata data Drives that are configured as SATA

VM software is installed (Virtual Box) but not running at startup ( One VM with Linux mint on a .VDI drive )

Hi PaulN,

Thank you for your patience as I work to address the issue you've raised. I have attempted to recreate the problem you described, but I need your assistance to better understand the mounting process you used.

Based on my tests, creating a VHD in Disk Manager does not show the issue. To further investigate and accurately recreate the problem, could you please provide detailed instructions on how you are mounting the VHD? Any specific steps or settings you use would be helpful.

See photo for your reference:

Your cooperation in providing this information is greatly appreciated, and it will help us assist you more effectively.

I can mount the VHD with either Disk Manager or "mount" from right click in Explorer both have the same effect.

If the Management window is open it will crash when I click on something inside it. If its not open then it will not open.

The Intel Storage Middleware Service stops (terminates) and will not start until the VHD in unmounted.

This happens in remote desktop and directly on PC.

From Event Viewer I get the following Application error :-

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Faulting application name: RstHSA.Wpf.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x67d981ee

I also get the following .NET Runtime error ( Note I have uninstalled all previous versions ( core runtime 3.1.32 / framework 1.1 /ASP.Net core 7.0.20/ Desktop Runtime 8.0.19 (x64) / Desktop Runtime 7.0.20 (x64)  and installed Desktop Runtime 9.0.8 (x64)

Note this is below the application entry and has same time stamp.

I am sorry but I can not see the picture you posted (In Firefox Brave or Edge )

Thank you for looking at this

Hi PaulN,

Thank you for providing the detailed error logs and additional information about the issue you're experiencing with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) and VHD mounting. I appreciate your thorough documentation of the problem, including the specific error messages from Event Viewer and the .NET Runtime errors.

Based on the comprehensive information you've provided, including the detailed error logs showing the RstHSA.Wpf.exe application crashes and the Intel Storage Middleware Service termination, I can see this is a complex interaction issue between the RST application and VHD mounting functionality.

I will be checking this matter further internally with our engineering teams to investigate this specific compatibility issue. The detailed error logs and your systematic testing approach will be invaluable for our technical teams to analyze and develop a solution.

I will get back to you as soon as more information becomes available. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated as we work to resolve this matter.
