Asrock z790 RS Pro + 13th Gen i3 13100

2x WD NVME in raid 1

Raid Drivers tested (SetupRST) = 18.7.6.1010 / 19.5.7.1058 (From Asrock) / 19.5.8.1059.2

Windows 11 pro 24H2

Memory = Crucial (64GB)

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Application - opens fine and works with no VHD (from a file) mounted.

As soon as a VHD is mounted the App fails to open with either 0xA0080000 or 0xA00906B3 errors ( tested with VHD file on raid and none raid sata ACHI drive )

I have tried uninstall and reinstall and the following links

Installed the drivers 20.2.1.1016 and reinstalled the management app.

It seems to only pick up one of my SATA drives

I did have an idea to remove all intel programs ( BCUninstaller) and drivers (Driver Store Explorer)

Not my greatest idea as it caused W11 not to start "inaccessible boot device" good job I have system restore turned on!

It reverted back to old driver and all 4 SATA drives were shown.

Reinstalled  20.2.1.1016 and reinstalled the management app.

After mounting the VHD and pressing the rescan I get an error/crash

"Faulting application name: RstMwService.exe, version: 20.2.1.1016, time stamp: 0x671ba832

Restarting the RstMwService.exe fails

As an after thought - Would it be possible for the management app to ignore drives that are not RAID. In my case that would be the 4 AHCI drives and any VHDs ?

Hi Paul,

Thank you for contacting Intel Customer Support regarding the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) issues you're experiencing with driver version 20.2.1.1016. I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with the RST Management app only detecting one SATA drive and the RstMwService.exe crashes when mounting VHDs and using the rescan function.

I can see that you've done extensive troubleshooting, including a complete removal of Intel programs and drivers (which unfortunately caused the boot issue), and you've provided detailed error information showing the RstMwService.exe crash with exception code 0xc0000005.

Current Issues Identified:

  1. Drive Detection: RST Management app only shows 1 of 4 SATA drives with driver 20.2.1.1016
  2. Service Crash: RstMwService.exe crashes when mounting VHD and pressing rescan
  3. Service Recovery: RstMwService.exe fails to restart after crash
  4. Driver Regression: Older driver showed all 4 SATA drives correctly
  5.

Your idea about the management app ignoring non-RAID drives (AHCI drives and VHDs) is interesting from a user experience perspective. However, the current behavior where RST interacts with all storage devices is by design for comprehensive storage management.

Based on your system configuration and the specific issues you're experiencing, I recommend trying the latest RST driver package designed for your platform. The latest version available is 20.2.1.1016.4, which includes important fixes that may resolve your drive detection and VHD interaction issues:

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Driver Installation Software (Version 20.2.1.1016.4) Download Link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/849936/intel-rapid-storage-technology-driver-insta…

Installation Steps:

  1. Uninstall current RST software completely through Windows Settings
  2. Restart your system
  3. Download and install RST version 20.2.1.1016.4 from the link above
  4. Restart again after installation
  5. Test drive detection and VHD functionality
  6.

Why This May Help:

  • Version 20.2.1.1016.4 includes fixes for the RstMwService.exe crash you're experiencing
  • Updated storage enumeration that should properly detect all your SATA drives
  • Improved VHD handling and rescan functionality
  • Addresses the specific issues you encountered with version 20.2.1.1016
  •

After installation, please test:

  1. Drive Detection: Verify all 4 SATA drives appear in RST Management app
  2. VHD Mounting: Mount your VHD without crashes
  3. Rescan Function: Test rescan button without RstMwService.exe crashes
  4. Service Stability: Monitor RstMwService.exe for stability
  5.

If you continue to experience the same issues after installing RST version 20.2.1.1016.4, please provide the new error details, and we can explore additional solutions or investigate this as a potential compatibility issue.

Your detailed documentation of the problem has been very helpful for understanding the issue.

Best regards,
