SSD D3-S4510 series with RAID1 and trim function

We want to built a new PC with this Intel SSDs and a RAID1 installation. In former times our customer used in this configuration normal HDDs and the Intel Raipd Storage driver to control the RAID. We don't find information if the SSDs in this configuration can use the trim function from Win10. Is it possible that the Intel Intel Memory and Storage Tool support the trim function? Why works the trim function in RAID0 and RAID1 not?

What will happens with the SSDs in RAID1 without trim function. Become the SSDs full after writing a lot of data because the OS desn't know how much space is free on the SSDs?

We don't find information about this at the Intel websides.

Hello, Arno65.

Thank you for contacting Intel® Memory and Storage support.

As we understand, you are requesting support; related to your Intel® SSD D3-S4510 Series, using the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool that is part of a RAID 1 configuration created using Intel® RST. If we inferred correctly, please, review the following information:

1-Based on the Is TRIM Passed Through to Array Member SSDs in Intel® RST RAID Arrays? Article (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000058208/technologies/intel-rapid-storage-technology-intel-rst.html)

TRIM is only supported on RAID 0. Beginning with the Intel® 7 Series chipset. the driver supports TRIM on SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration.

If you need further assistance related to RST, let us know to move your thread to the proper forum.

2- The Intel® Memory and Storage Tool CLI (Command-Line Interface) https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19520/intel-memory-and-storage-tool-cli-command-line-interface.html?v=t is the best tool to check your SSD health and status, as mentioned in the Video on Intel® SSD Firmware Update and Health Monitoring Using Intel® Memory And Storage Tool (Intel® MAS) article (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057393/memory-and-storage.html)

Based on the User Guides (CLI-Intel-MAS-User-Guide-Public-342245-013US.pdf)

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/690882/CLI-Intel-MAS-User-Guide-Public-342245-013US.pdf

A good option may be to run the SSD optimizer as mentioned on the following command:

1.2.13   Optimizer

The Optimizer command optimizes the selected drive and partition. This feature is analogous to the Intel MAS GUI’s Optimizer feature. The optimizer feature works by discovering and issuing trims to out-of-date LBAs. This functionality is similar to defragmentation. Used to speed up drive performance.

Syntax

IntelMAS start [-help|-h] [-output|-o (text|nvmxml|json)] -intelssd (Index|SerialNumber|PhysicalPath) -optimizer [-partition (id)]

Examples

IntelMAS start -intelssd 3 -optimizer

100%

Status: Completed successfully

4- To answer your question.

What will happen with the SSDs in RAID1 without trim function? Become the SSDs full after writing a lot of data because the OS doesn't know how much space is free on the SSDs?

You would be able to check this on the Intel® Memory and storage Tool, and your OS will alert you about it, and then you may need to decide if you want to run the optimizer, the defragmentation, or the OS tool to release space on your SSD.

For information about your OS options for space management, we advise you to contact the OS manufacturer.

We will follow up with you again on Tuesday, the 15th of February 2022, if we do not receive an answer from you. Please, let us know if you would like to schedule a different date for the follow-up.

Best regards.

Hello Jos,

We tested it here and see that we can't activate the trim function at an RAID1 with Intel SSD and the Intel Memory and Storage Tool. Why doesn't  it work at RAID 1 but at RAID 0 it should work. Is it a technical problem or will Intel it only support for Server Installations?

Best regards

Arno65

Hello, Arno65.

Thank you for your reply.

- As mentioned on the Is TRIM Passed Through to Array Member SSDs in Intel® RST RAID Arrays? Article (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000058208/technologies/intel-rapid-storage-technology-intel-rst.html)

TRIM is only supported; on RAID 0.

Beginning; with the Intel® 7 Series chipset. The driver supports TRIM on SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration.

This issue is related to Intel® RST, and we will move your thread to the RST support community.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best regards.

Hello Arno65,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

The TRIM feature provides support for all solid state disks (SSDs) in the storage system that meet the ATA-8 protocol requirements and are not part of an array. There are no technical issues, beginning with the Intel® 7 Series chipset, the driver supports TRIM on SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration, but not on a RAID 1 configuration.

Please let me know if you have any other issue related to Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) or if you have any additional concerns.
