Announcing Intel IoT Developer Kit

"I am pleased to announce the launch of Intel® IoT Developer Kit (beta) - a complete set of hardware and software resources for creating innovative IoT solutions.  IoT dev kit is part of a larger Intel IoT developer program targeted at hobbyists, students and entrepreneurial developers. In addition to the IoT dev Kit, the program includes IoT developer zone for downloads, latest content and supportlocal Hackathons & meet-ups to showcase and share ideas, and IoT Academic courseware program that will assist leading universities in building curriculum for the Internet of Things.

IoT Dev Kit consists of:

(1) Hardware components (Intel® Galileo and Intel® Edison boards, shields, sensors, actuators)

(2) Software image and/or the software packages 

(3) Support for various IDEs allowing you to program in your favorite language

      (Eclipse, Intel XDK IoT Edition, Arduino & Wyliodrin

(4) Cloud services for a data management and analytics

(5) Additional tools and solutions for optimization and performance

      (Intel System Studio for IoT & Wind River VxWorks for Makers)"

Hi,

I am an IoT enthusiast, interested to know & learn more about Intel's contributions in IoT. 

Also how much this kit will cost me. Or if there is a way to get it for zero cost.

Where do you live? You may be close to one of our Roadshows, where you could get a kit and a lot of training, as well as participate of the hackathon. Check the itinerary at https://iotroadshow.intel.com/ .

If not, you can check at http://maker.intel.com, select your interest - Galileo or Edison - and check the section "Where to buy". For extra sensors and components, all supported by the Intel Developer Kit for IoT, check the  Grove Starter Kit Plus - Intel ® IoT Edition

I´m a professor at Faesa, a Faculty in Brasil. We working in the tecnology education area for more than  44 years. There are 6 courses in computer science area and 9 engineering courses.

Is there a Intel program to donate Galileo Kits to promote a difusion of the knowledge in IoT ?

There is one roadshow planned on Nov 28-29. You can register at https://iotroadshow.intel.com/en/home/ and could get both training and the developer kit when you participate in the hackathon. Hope this helps.

we haven't heard seen much interest on a Win32 version yet and hence only provided a x64 version.

However, that said, as a workaround you might

  1. download from https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-23242 the Arduino IDE and
  2. copy the whole directory i686-pokysdk-mingw32 from hardware\tools\edison\sysroots\i686-pokysdk-mingw32 folder into the folder iotdk-ide-win\devkit-x86\sysroots of the Eclipse IDE
  3. in the devkit-launcher.bat script change 
    "set PATH=%PATH%;%DEVKIT_HOME%\devkit-x86\sysroots\x86_64-pokysdk-mingw32\usr\bin\i586-poky-linux;%DEVKIT_HOME%\iot-devkit\devkit-debugger"
    to
    "set PATH=%PATH%;%DEVKIT_HOME%\devkit-x86\sysroots\i686-pokysdk-mingw32\usr\bin\i586-poky-linux;%DEVKIT_HOME%\iot-devkit\devkit-debugger"

I haven't really tested yet so I am not sure it would work (I did a quick test on a x64 system with this modifications to check the compiler still worked). In particular, this would only be the cross compiler part but not the Eclipse part. Currently not sure whether Eclipse in the IoT devkit is x64 or x32 itself.

Hi Sulamita Since the nearest road show is in Beijing, and I can't really justify taking the time or spending the funds to attend, not to mention that my Chinese is very basic so I couldn't really participate in the groups, would it be possible for your instructors to put together an export version of the material they use? I am looking for ideas/material on how to use the Grove kit with the Galileo in class. It would also be nice if Intel could put together some material on using node.js with the Galileo. All of the books and tutorials I have seen focus on using node.js/javascript as part of a web page. This might be OK later, but it would be easier if we could start off using node.js with the XDK IoT development environment to control the Galileo, and include some discussion at novice level of how to write code in an asynchronous environment. I am starting to put together some material, but am learning node.js myself, so slow going. The examples are a start, but if someone who has been exposed to Python or C (as in the Arduino IDE) starts to try to write programs, he/she will quickly run into problems. It would also be nice if some more examples could be done. The GIT site basically says to look at the Python libraries, which is great for letting people know what is theoretically possible, but isn't clear on how to do things. For example, using hardware interrupts or connecting with a i2c LCD (other than the Grove). Thank you for your time and while challenging, this is still a great system and offers lots of opportunities for creativity. Regards rgb

I love to use and test those boards and sensors. But unfortunately none of your shows are available in my country. Do you have any method for us to explore those boards and get some knowledge. I am seriously interested in Edison boards, would be a great help for my college projects.

I am a mobile apps developer from India and create IoT related things using Arduino which can be controlled from my mobile apps. My questions are :

1. Is the Intel hardware board similar to Arduino?

2. Can I run the same sketch of Arduino in Intel Hardware also?

3.  What are the difference between Galileo and Edison?

4. How can I get a Intel IoT Dev Kit?

1. They are different boards. Intel Galileo is compatible with arduino, and it also has other features.

2. Probably yes, maybe with a few changes, but it seems that they are software compatible as  well.

3. Galileo is more like an arduino whereas the edison is more like the raspberry pi. Not really that simple, but it gives you an idea.

4. Buying it, or going  to a IoT event

I created a guide to setup Qt Creator with CMake, and it runs in all the platforms available in the SDK provided by Intel (32 and 64 bits, under Windows, Linux, and Mac).
