Are you using an USB 3 port?

If your laptop has multiple USB 3.0 ports, try another one - On some motherboards not all USB 3.0 ports can operate at SuperSpeed.  And, sometimes the BIOS settings need to be changed in order for the USB 3.0 ports to operate at the higher transfer rates.

The following links may help:

I have gone through that, however I don't see XHCI settings in BIOS.

I'm having the same problem.

Camera hooked up to USB 3.

Color Stream fine

Depth Stream fails or crashes.

All applications and examples lock up.

Suggestions?

Does the UI message for the F200 in Settings>Change PC settings>PC Settings>PC and devices>devices in Windows 8.1 say the camera is connected to USB 3.0?

Kinect for Windows V2 had similar USB 3.0 related problems and Microsoft finally developed a tool for checking user systems for compliance.  You could try running the tool to see what it says - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/kinectforwindows/purchase/sensor_setup.aspx .

If your system has a PCIe 2.0 x8 or x16 slot available, there are USB 3.0 cards that worked for the Kinect and might work with the F200.

Jack

Afanqi (in discussion SDK installer failed to detect 3D Camera) found that the "Syba 4 Port USB 3.0 PCIe 2.0 x1 Controller Card" works with the F200 - see that discussion for more details.

Jack

P.S. The manufacturer's documentation suggests that this card may work in a x1 slot - I don't recall seeing this card mentioned as a solution for the Kinect and none that were mentioned seemed to work in the x1 slot.  See http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1260 for more details.

The kinect tool says I have a USB port of unknown bandwidth, may or may not work.

I'm on a new laptop, adding a card isn't really an option, unless it's a thunderbolt card I guess.

Hi Eric, Im in the same position as you with laptops. I'm going to try a hunch that the camera cannot draw enough current when the laser turns on so this causes the camera to crash and become unresponsive. I've ordered some stuff to test this idea, hopefully the use of a Y cable extender so that the camera can draw from two USB ports at the same time, or if I splice into the 5V line and hook it up to something that has the current to turn the laser on, will help the situation.

If any hardware guys from Intel or Creative could comment on the power reqs of the unit it would save a lot of time and cable splicing.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil, I think you might be correct because Kinect v2 also would not work with an expansion card unless the card had +5V power supplied to its power connector (molex or sata, depending on the card).  On some laptops, disabling power saving and connecting the laptop to an outlet also worked.

Eric, it might help to know who manufactured your laptop.  Have you talked to tech support about this issue?

Jack

Hi Jack,

Yeah I tried all I could think of on the laptop side of things. I have two clevo laptops and their bios options are quite limited, and setting the windows power management options did nothing either. I was able to get the camera working on the laptop by splicing in a 5V line to a USB3.0 extender. We measured it to be drawing about 600mA when the laser turns on. Although an ugly solution, it was good to see that you can get it working.

Thanks

Phil

Eric,

If power is the problem, then a powered hub may work:  The Pluggable USB 3.0 7-port hub reportedly worked with the Kinect V2 when connected to a laptop that did not work without the hub.  The hub you suggested has specs that suggest it might also work and can always be returned if it doesn't.

Jack

The specification for the RealSense camera says that it needs a direct connection to a USB 3 port on a computer and will not work with a USB hub.  I haven't actually tried this myself to confirm it as I don't have a USB 3 hub, but I haven't heard yet of anyone who has got the camera working using one.

Marty, I guess the issue of the hub is for power consumption. If you have a powered hub that has allocated enough power for each port, it should in theory work. Cheap ones share the power along all the ports, and that is not enough.

There was another thread where a guy had trouble with his usb port, connected external power to the camera and it worked.

Update, the powered usb hub solved the problem.

Eric,

Which powered usb hub did you use?  Others may find this information helpful.

I used the powered hub linked above.

But there's a twist in the plot. I had the thing plugged into switched outlet and the switch was off. I just noticed this today when I had to plug something else into it.

So, just adding the hub fixed the problem. Needs more research.

I was having the same issue and the powered usb hub worked for me as well.

I had to reinstall the drivers first but did work and stayed on for 20mins so far.
