Same issue with me. HP G60-230US. "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Happens randomly while surfing the web. Is there a fix for this yet?

I am currently using driver version 7.15.10.1829, Date 25/6/2009, under Vista Home Prem x32 and it has been working without any crashes for a long time now.

:)

Try updating your display drivers.

Hello. I followed your instructions to try out the GPA with the server running on my Acer Extensa 5630 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and an Intel GMA (Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family). I used the Intel driver update utility. Right after the latest driver was installed, it started failing every once in a while. The screen goes black for a second and then windows says that the graphics system failed but recovered successfully. In the event logs, the data for the message is simply "igfx". That still happens, but since it at least recovers from it, I haven't downgraded the drivers. The new driver version is7.15.10.1659. So question #1 is, where can I get support for this driver issue? It may or may not be related to what happened when I ran GPA, described below.

I ran the client from my windows XP home edition desktop and the server in my laptop. I followed the instructions and was able to run the tool on my little game demo and collect performance statistics for a few seconds. But it always crashes after a few seconds. I run the same game demo a lot, and it never crashes by itself like this. Question two is, how can I figure out what is causing the crash? Are there logs that I can browse? What information do you need from me to get help? Thanks in advance. I look forward to using the GPA software to optimize the game I am working on, which I'm doing to try to get a job in the game industry. If I'm successful and this works, I swear I'll spread the word about it and optimizing games for laptops :)

Naughty me. Here is the information about my system and tools:

Tool name: System Analyzer

GPA version number: Intel GPA Server 2.0.0.60326, Intel GPA System Analyzer 2.0.195329.0
target graphics chipset: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
target graphics driver version: 7.15.10.1659
target operating system: Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit) service pack 1
target system memory: 3GB

My laptop is an Acer Extensa 5630. And more information about the crash and windows messages:

If I just run my demo without any input, it does not crash. It crashes in the input library I use after I start moving around with the keyboard. Also, there is a warning in the taskbar about DEP (data execution prevention). I hope this is enough info. Later.

Sigh... I answered my own question while collecting data to post. I looked up DEP and how to completely disable it and now the demo runs with the server and the system analyzer just fine. Does the tool need to change to be DEP compatible? So the only unanswered question I have is about the glitch that started happening when I upgraded the driver. I would rather have my system working normally, but for the moment I can live with the intermitent glitch to be able to use your GPA tools.

Hello...

First of all, I'm glad that you've been able to get the product up and running.

As to the driver issue that you encountered ("The screen goes black for a second and then windows says that the graphics system failed but recovered successfully"), this is a know problem with that version of the driver. I've sent off an email to the driver team to see if they have an ETA for a fixed version. (I ran into the problem myself a week or so ago and notified them of the issue, so they've had a little bit of time to look at this already.)

As to DEP ("Does the tool need to change to be DEP compatible?"), I'll do some more checking and let you know what I find out.

Thanks for using the toolset, and I hope to hear more about your experiences in using GPA!

Regards,

Neal

So it's a known driver issue. That makes me feel better. Thanks for the info! The glitch does seem to happen less and less with time. As for the DEP problem, I just wanted to clarify that the System analyzer and the server both remain up. It is only my demo that crashes when run by the remote server program. I never saw the problem when running the demo myself. I am running with DEP turned off system wide without problems. As with other things with Vista, you get used to having to disable all the fancy security stuff Microsoft has added to be able to have a normal environment. Oh well.

I am experiencing the same problem. I also have the Extensa 5630 and my screen goes blank and I get a message that the graphics system failed but recovered with the same "igfx" message. My concern was that I just purchased the lap top and have only been using it for a week....and already I am experiencing a problem. Am I correct in understanding that there is no current fix for the problem and we just have to wait it out???Thanks.

I've been in communciation with the driver team, and they are escalating this particular issue. As soon as I have more detailed information I will post it here on this site. Sorry that I don't have an ETA for a resolution.

If you are having the problem of the screen blanking for a second or so and then coming back, please install this patch (and let me know if you are still having issues):
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2996

This patch (taking the driver to version 1688) is supposed to fix a number of issues found in the driver, including issues where the screen momemtarily goes blank.

I'll be posting more info on this as it becomes available.

Thanks for trying this out... I wish the results had been better than you seem to have encountered!

By the way, is there a specific, reproducible sequence of events that you follow where this error occurs? Or if not, any pattern that you can see that appears to cause the bug to occur?

I have some good news... it now appears that we've found a way to consistently and repeatedly duplicate the issue within about 10 minutes or so. Also, as I mentioned previously this defect has been escalated, and is actively being worked on by the driver team.

I'll keep updating this thread with more info as I receive it.

Neal

Mr. Neal,

We too are seeing this issue. I cannot tell you which unit we're using as I'm a developer, and this is a custom motherboard.

We have placed the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset.
When we used the xxx.1637, the issue was not there. When we upgrade to 7.15.10.1659 or xxx.1688, we get the occasional "The graphics Driver has stopped responding, but has restarted". When we look in the Vista Problems, Reports and Solutions, it shows up as a Video Hardware error:

Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.6
Locale ID: 1033

BCCode: 117
BCP1: 85A1AS10
BCP2: 8DC194E0

Again, we cannot get it to reproduce when we Uninstall and re-install the older driver: 7.15.10.1637

Thank you for working on this.

Hello,

I've just talked with the graphics driver team, and they are recommending that I move all discussion regarding the blanking screen issue to another forum, as this is a graphics driver issue and not a GPA issue. By doing this the issue can receive more visibility with the appropriate community.

Thanks!

I just did some more checking on this, and found that you do need to disable DEP when using GPA with Vista. There's a comment about this in the Release Notes that you download with GPA.

Note that if you are still encountering this issue, you might want to submit a defect report to the driver team (see the Announcement above for this forum).
