icon in a launched application

I have a console app which has an icon included as part of the resources. This is shown when the application is run from the desktop or from explorer however when launched from another application (via CREATEPROCESS in a Quickwin app) the default icon is used. Why does this occur? The documentation lists functions to load icons dynamically, is this what I need to do in this case?
