dx38bt: a bootable device has not been detected

(I am not sure if this is the right forum.)

The MB Intel DX38BT worked well so far.

Recently it is posting below msg while booting the PC:

"a bootable device has not been detected"

However F12 key lists the diskdrives correctly and can boot from listed diskdrives without any problem..

I  have tried various boot cfg options but do not help to correct the problem.

Please direct to right forum and any documented solution to fix the problem.

1. Enter BIOS settings (F2 after power ON), reset BIOS to default settings (I assume that PC works in  SATA AHCI mode rather than RAID) and then exit and save the settings.

2. Check also the CMOS battery status.

Leon

Edit:

"...However F12 key lists the diskdrives correctly and can boot from listed diskdrives without any problem.."  are you working with multi system boot manager?

LeonWaksman, Thanks, Appreciate your help.

I tried resetting the bios with

1. Jumper ( pin 2-3, configuration),

2. loading the default settings

3. Removing CMOS battery ( battery is new)

It is single os system  (no multi boot).

Bios UEFI option is disabled

Updated bios using intel express utility.

Tried installing Windows10 OS on a new ssd drive.

But still it shows the same error:

"a bootable device has not been detected"

Azeem,

Thanks, Please find the PC system information (Intel Desktop Mother Board DX38BT).

1. Output  from Microsoft System Information (Msinfo32.exe) Tool

2. Photos of Bios screens

3. Boot error screen

4. Boot F10 submenu

Please let me know if you need more details.

Hi Bharatish,

Windows 10 is UEFI boot system so, why the UEFI boot option is disabled? Unless the system drive has MBR partition type, the UEFI boot should be enabled. You may check the partition type in Disk Management.

Leon,

Thanks,  Windows 10  32 bit allows only legacy bios boot setup.

Windows 10  64 bit allows both legacy and UEFI boot setup.

Currently I have setup legacy boot  for Windows 10  64 bit os.

I have tried enabling or disabling UEFI bios option but did not help.

I have also tried booting with Windiws XP (32 bit) and windows 7 (32 bit) drives

with legacy boot setup but did not work.

Thanks & Regards

Bharatish

 Hi bharatish,

1. You may try BIOS Recovery with the Configuration Jumper Removed method.

2. Prepare USB stick fully formatted to FAT32 with Bios File . Format your USB with Quick Format option unchecked. Do not format your USB in MAC (OS) or Linux machine. Use Windows.
3.  Disconnect the power adapter.
4.  Remove the Configuration Jumper. (page 55 in Technical Product Specification)
5. Insert the USB with the BIOS file into  USB slot.
6.  Reconnect the power adapter and power ON the computer. Wait 30 sec - 2min. The Recovery process will start automatically and will end after 2 -5 minutes.
7. When bios recovery is completed, press and hold the Power Button to switch the power OFF, remove the power, adapter, the USB and replace the Configuration Jumper (pins 1-2) .

8. Power your computer ON and check.

Leon,

Thanks, I will try your below suggestion :

BIOS Recovery with the Configuration Jumper Removed method.

1. Is there any way that I can download  latest Bios software from Intel website?

I do not see Bios download Links on intel website.

2.  Currently I am guessing that the Bios is stuck in UEFI boot mode even though UEFi option  shows as

disabled in Bios. Besides the MB does not support Secure boot.

I am not sure why there is UEFI option provided on this MB.

3. “Windows system Information” utility  shows  BIOS Mode as Legacy.

In enclosed “Belarc Advisor” utility report, it is shown as:

Boot Mode: UEFI (Secure Boot likely not supported by this UEFI)

UEFI: Intel Corp. BTX3810J.86A.2006.2009.1023.1057 10/23/2009

Please take a look.

Thanks

Hello Bharatish,

I'm sorry, but I can't help with the BIOS file. I never worked with this Intel's board. From the different reports about system state it looks that BIOS Recovery would be advisable.

Leon,

Scot suggested bios recovery (jumper removed) using cdrom method.

This method worked but the problem still persists.

Thanks

Hi Leon,

Thanks, I tried your recommendation but did not help.

1. Copied  BT2006P.BIO file to fully formatted fat32 USB drive.

With power off,  removed the cfg jumper,  inserted USB drive,

Powered on and waited for 5 minutes.

PC did not reboot or did not power-off

powered off after5 minutes, tried rebooting.

This did not fix the issue.

I also tried step1 with bootable USB drive with BT2006P.ISO image.

Looks like system did not even access the USB Drive.

2.  I tried with bootable USB drive with BT2006P.ISO image.

Booted from USB drive using (F10) menu.

It updates the Bios but did not fix the issue.

Thanks & regards

Bharatish

Hi bharatish,

Greetings for the day!

Hope you are doing well too. I suggest updating all drivers, BIOS, firmware, and any other software updates from the OEM team, as they manage and release the drivers themselves.

Best Regards,

Azeem

Oh, so many questions...

Because this board is old (2007) and long discontinued, Intel does not offer any kind of support for it - and this includes documentation and downloads, which have all been removed (including the Desktop Boards forum here in the Community). Yea, I know, idiotic. Intel has lost their customer focus completely. They don't care or they're too stupid to realize they are losing customers right and left because of this. Their motto has become 'What had you bought from us lately?'. Being a former (retired) employee, I have begged them to reconsider this idiocy. They scoff it off as 'preventing security issues'. What baloney. I'm embarrassed.

BT2006P.bio is indeed the latest BIOS update. Depending upon the previous version of the BIOS that you had installed, you either need to do a standard update or you need to do a BIOS Recovery. The farther away the version numbers are from each other, the more likely that you need to install the latest via BIOS Recovery. Now, the bad news: According to the Board's Guide (attached), the only way to do a BIOS Recovery is by preparing a CDROM that contains the .BIO file. I was unable to find the ISO file, however, so you would need to prepare this as well.

So, my suggestion is to install the .BIO file, using the standard iFlash method, and check whether it works then. I also suggest that you go into BIOS Setup and reset the configuration to BIOS defaults.

Hope this helps,

Scott,

Thanks, I agree. It should be owners who should be deciding when to throw out their PCs and not the manufactures. At least intel should keep all the documentation and software available to download as it does not cost them much. This is much safer than going to third party websites like softpedia, theretroweb...

This PC (dx38bt) is one of the many desktop PC/laptops I have.  This MB (with windows 10 ) is still quite capable in home environment.

As of now the MB is still works well with boot F10 option but does not automatically boot.

Thanks

Scott,

Thanks, I created a crdom with bt2006p.bio file.

The forced update/recovery of  the bios (jumper removed) with this cdrom worked.

Please see the attached screen shot.

However  the below problem still persists.

"a bootable device has not been detected"

So the problem does not seem to be related to bios.

Thanks

Bharatish

I also suggested resetting the BIOS configuration. Was this ever tried after installing this latest BIOS via BIOS Recovery?

Ooo, just had another thought - in the BIOS Advanced/Drive Configuration scene, set the Hard Drive Pre-Delay parameter to 5 (seconds) and see if this alleviates the problem. With an SSD connected, I wouldn't expect this to make any difference but, I have seen this magically address problems like this.

Scott,

Thanks, After the bios recovery, I removed the cmos battery as well as reset using bios menu.

I have also tried changing delay setting. But nothing is helping.

Thanks

Bharatish
