So I have been troubleshooting this for the past week, I am using the ASUS Zenbook S 14, which has an Ultra 7 268V processor and thunderbolt 4.

But if I plug in any real thunderbolt device like a eGPU dock, Intel PCI Express upstream port won't start and laptop will loses trackpad, wifi, audio. After searching the internet, It looks like this issues affect other laptop with lunar lake.

Is there any on can help ?

Hi James0G,

Thank you for posting in the communities!

I'm sorry to hear that you're encountering problems with your system. In order to assist you more effectively and find the best solution, could you kindly provide the following details?

  • What is the make and model of the eGPU dock that you're using?
  • Is the eGPU working fine before?
  • Have you check if your eGPU is compatible with your laptop?
  • Did you already contacted ASUS regarding to this issue?

Kindly run this on your system so that I can also gauge the following peripherals and the driver versions that you have:

Intel® System Support Utility for Windows*

Once finished downloading, open the tool, click on scan (leave the default items checked), click next, then save the system information to a .txt file. Please provide us the .txt file.

Hi Earl,

The eGPU dock is a Mantiz Venus(TBX-550CA) which should use the Thunderbolt 3 controller DSL6540 or JHL6540, and the eGPU is an AMD RX6600.
I've frequently used this eGPU dock with my old laptop without any issues.  Old laptop is a Lenovo Yoga 14c with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU.
On Lunar Lake, I tried using an AMD RX6600 and an Intel B580 as eGPU, and neither worked.

Hi JamesOG,

I'm still currently investigating on the issue; can you clarify a few details:

  • Can you confirm if the issues happen while the laptop is plugged in or not?
  • What is the current power plan implemented on the affected laptops?
  • You mention earlier that the eGPU was working fine with your older laptop, may I know if you tested other devices and check if the issue persists?

This will greatly help in our investigation.

Best regards,

Hi Earl,

  • Yes, these issues occur whether the laptop is plugged in or not.
  • The laptop is currently running on balanced power plan.
  • I still own my older laptop and the eGPU still works fine on it. I also lent the eGPU dock to my friend for testing a few years ago and they also had no problems, I'm not sure about the model of my friend's laptop, just remember that it has a CPU a little older than Ick Lake.

I am having the exact same issue.

When connecting my TB eGPU (Zotac Ampbox Mini, NVidia 1660 Super) the device starts up for about 5-10 seconds, then I hear the "disconnect" sound and lose trackpad, wifi, bluetooth and touchscreen (don't know about audio). Only the keyboard works but restarting windows fails (hangs forever).

The laptop is a Dell XPS13 9350 with an Core Ultra 7 258V. Windows, BIOS and System drivers are up to date.

In rare cases (like every 30th try) I get the TB accessory installed and connected for about 5min but then the whole system crashes (hard turn off, no bluescreen just everything off) or the device gets disconnected.

If I boot up with the TB eGPU connected, the same happens during boot. The GPU spins up for about 5-10 seconds and then immediately stops. The device is not listed in the device manager after bootup. If I select "search for new hardware" I get the same result as when hot-plugging the eGPU in.

I've also tested on a Zenbook S14 with Lunar Lake from a friend of mine, the behavior is identical.

The eGPU works without any issue for hours on my old XPS13 9310 with an Intel i7 1185G7 and an HP Dragonfly with a i5 11th gen.

There are multiple reports out there of users having the same issue, independent of device manufacturer. All they have in common is that they are using a Lunar Lake system.

Interestingly, I've tried the Thunderbolt eGPU using Ubuntu 24.10 on the XPS 9350 with Core Ultra 258V and it worked immediately without any disconnects. On the same Laptop where the Thunderbolt device does not work using Windows 11...

Also not working for my Dell Lunar Lake XPS13 "Ultra 9 processor 288V" using Windows 11.

No CUDA/AI dev possible and gaming using RTX3090 with my  laptop. This was no problem with my old dell xps 1280p

Is this a CPU limitation or just Windows problem?
