AX200 and AX201 compatibility

Hello,

I just got a desktop HP EliteDesk 800 G4 which has a Intel i7-8700 @3.20 GHz. Motherboard is provided with M2. slot for a WI-FI Intel® 9560 802.11AC 2x2 with Bluetooth® M.2 Combo Card non-vPro™. I have a WI-FI 6 router and would love to use an Intel WI-FI 6 AX 201 (which I read is the new version of the 9560) but I ma not sure if this card is compatible with my processor; I read in several tech posts that AX 201 is compatible only with 10th generation Intel processor and mine is a 8th generation. Should I use the AX 200 instead?

Any help is truly appreciated.

To answer the question, no, they are not compatible. The 9560 utilizes the CNVio interconnect whereas the AX201 (and AX211) utilize the CNVio2 interconnect.
The ugly truth is that systems that utilize the 9560 are not upgradable.
Sorry,

Hello Scott and thanks for your reply.

I just wanted to share something with you and hear your precious opinion. I have downloaded (and attached the links below for your reference) the cut sheet of my unit (HP EliteDesk 800 G4 tower) and the next model the HP EliteDesk 800 G5. As you can see they have same intel chipset (Q370 vPro and non-vPro). On the available processor section, they both have the Intel® Core™ i7-8700 with Intel® UHD Graphics 630 (3.2 GHz base frequency, up to 4.6 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 12 MB cache, 6 cores), which is the processor on my unit. On the communications section the G5 unit shows the option of the Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 (2x2) and Bluetooth® M.2 Combo Card non-vPro™. As a result, this make me think that my unit with an i7-8700 processor can accept the AX200. Am I right?

To agree with your statement about the AX201 not compatibility with my unit, the EliteDesk 800 G6 which has an Intel Q470 chipset and the available processor are only 10th generation (i3, i5, i7 and i9), shows the Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201 (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® M.2 combo card.

Would love to hear what you think.

Thanks in advance

Giovanni

So, my 'precious' opinions...

  • Gee, even my wife doesn't think my opinions are precious.
  • You cannot read anything into what it says in these spec sheets. Fact is, they often have different motherboards for different configurations. For example, your G4 is listed as having configurations that support the Wireless-AC 9560 and configurations that support the Realtek RTL8821CE-CG. In my experience, M.2 connectors that are configured to support CNVio cards usually do not support non-CNVio cards. What I am saying is that the AX200 and AX210 non-CNVio cards might not work in your CNVio-based system either.
  • There is another path that you could take - but only if your system has a free PCIe x1 connector (and a free internal USB connector. if you want to use Bluetooth), which I cannot tell from these spec sheets: Purchase a PCIe add-in card that hosts the AX200 or AX210 instead.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Scott,

I was about to buy a new card for my ASUS GL703GS with AC 9560 and was having some doubts... Indeed it seems not replaceable with newer wifi cards.

EDIT: best thread about this topic is Upgrading laptops with CNVio WiFi adapters (eg Wireless-AC 9560) to newer WiFi cards (Intel AX200/210) - Page 7 - Networking - Linus Tech Tips

It seems AX210 (standard, non-Killer) should be able to replace AC 9560 on my GL703G(S) for example...

Yes, that is possible - but I have to qualify this 'yes'. I have seen cases were systems supporting the AC 9560 would not work with an AX200/AX210 installed (the motherboard design had a problem). All you can do is try.
