BSOD when connecting bluetooth earbuds

HI,

I'm getting BSOD when connecting Sennheiser earbuds over bluetooth in Win 11 24H2 (regularly updated with latest updates). Problems started around April/May. Crashes were at first infrequent, then after updating Intel Bluetooth driver they became non-stop, then with latest driver version they are again intermittent. Is there something that can be done to avoid BSOD?

Hello IP_2025,

Thank you for posting in Intel community Forum.

For me to better understand and diagnose the issue further, let me ask you to provide detailed responses to the following questions. This information will help me isolate the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward.

  1. What is the model of your wireless controller?
  2. What is the brand and model of your system?
  3. What was the last change before the issue started?
  4. Are you having the same issue when you try to connect other Bluetooth device aside from your earbuds?
  5. How did you update the driver?
  6. What are the troubleshooting steps that you tried aside from updating the driver?
  7. For me to review the hardware and installed drivers. please help generate the SSU logs of your system. Kindly refer to the link below for the steps:

Hello,

  1. What is the model of your wireless controller?

Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 Gig+

  1. What is the brand and model of your system?

Lenovo ThinkPad P16s gen3

  1. What was the last change before the issue started?

It occured once in May few days after updating through lenovo app + windows updates. After further windows monthly  updates it started to crash often.  I noticed it happened when laptop was locked or coming back from sleep.

  1. Are you having the same issue when you try to connect other Bluetooth device aside from your earbuds?

I didn't notice it but I also rarely use any other bluetooth devices.

  1. How did you update the driver?

Through Lenovo system update app. I've installed the latest Intel driver manually.

  1. What are the troubleshooting steps that you tried aside from updating the driver?

Tried preventing the bluetooth device from turning off to save power through device manager. That helped for a while but then the problem came back in full swing with next win/driver update. Tried uninstalling latest windows updates - dodn't work. Then in August I updated to the latest Intel driver published on your site and it worked for a few days until crashing again. Now I get a crash maybe 1 out of 5 times I reconnect earbuds in a day, but it is totally random, I don't see any pattern anymore (like coming back from laptop lock screen or sleep, etc.).

Thank you for having a look into this.

Hello IP_2025,

Thank you for the update.

Based on the SSU logs, you are using Bluetooth driver version 23.140 and the latest Intel generic driver is 23.160. You can try to update to this driver and check. Here is the download link:

Hello Mike,

but I have exactly that latest version installed but Windows is showing different version number on WiFi and Bluetooth devices for some reason. Screenshot from device manager, SSU, and installed apps screens:

Hello IP_2025,

Thank you for the update.

That is weird, in the SSU logs, it is showing that the driver is not update.

Let me provide these steps instead and check if this one will help.

  1. Based on the SSU, you are using BIOS 1.24. The latest is 1.60. Here is the link: BIOS Update (Utility & Bootable CD) for Windows 11, 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 (Type 21J5, 21J6), P16s Gen 1(Type 21CK, 21CL), T14 Gen 3 (Type 21CF, 21CG), T16 Gen 1 (Type 21CH, 21CJ) - Lenovo Support US. Please try check this first with Lenovo if this is the correct BIOS for your system then update to the latest.
  2. Then load the latest driver for wireless and Bluetooth again and check if you will get BSOD again.

If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your assistance.

1. BIOS 1.24 is the latest version for my model (checked through Lenovo system updater and using serial number on their web).

2. Well, technically, Bluetooth device driver is the correct (latest) version. I'm not really sure why is SSU using version from WiFi device driver but I'm not sure if it is even relevant, network device/driver is working great. In my initial post I've added a dump file analysis with a stack trace from which it is obvious there is some issue with Bluetooth audio part and stack trace is consistent on every BSOD. It would be great if this could be escalated to the dev department for them to also have a look as I really don't see what else can I update. I've also tried removing all devices from device manager, then reinstalling them. The only benefit after all the latest updates is that crashes are for some reason less frequent but picking up any call still causes real anxiety and not even for the right reasons :-).

Best regards
