Copy process / connection break down when sending files over 9260 card

I have the following issue with an Intel 9260 wifi card. The moment I send (larger) files into the LAN (for example samba or Windows 10 network share), the copy process of Windows explorer (with a high chance, does not happen every time, but with a very high chance):

- goes to 0kb/s then jumps up again after some time or

- Windows gives an internal network error (Wifi driver seems to crash)

While this happens, and having a permanent ping open next to the copy, the moment the copy breaks down, the Acces Point isn't reachable anymore:

The images show, that after 1-2 seconds of the copy process, the copy rate drops to 0, in this moment the access point isn't reachable anymore via ping. If I'm lucky, like in this picture, after a short period of time, it goes slowly up again. But I also had it happen too now very often, that the ping breaks down into "internal network error" and the copy process is abrupted. The wifi driver mostly crashes at this moment, and Windows tries to reload the driver.

I tried two access points, and it happens on both of them, so the issues seem to lay in the Intel card or its drivers. I am using the latest available drivers for the 9260 card and Windows 10 64bit, version 20.60.0.

Receiving files work without an issue, from the LAN to the 9260 card. This issue just happens, when I send away files from the laptop, into the LAN.

The connection is 866Mbit (2x80Mhz). I tried two separate access points, both show the same behavior.

Edit:

I just noticed that I can randomly crash the Access Point by this (after some tries, copying a large file over the LAN, the access point would restart randomly)

I can see this behavior on two different routers/access points. One is a Linksys WRT1200, another a totally different model and brand by a totally different manufacturer (AVM FRITZ!WLAN Repeater DVB-C).

Hello klumsch,

As we understand, your system is having issues sending large files to other network devices, this causes the Access Point to restart. Based on your description of the issue, we can apply a few actions from the side of the adapter, however, keep in mind that it is not normal for the Access Points to restart or reboot under these circumstances.

- Perform a https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000022173/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html Clean Installation of Wireless Drivers. Try using the driver from your https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer as first option, if the issues persist after that, please try our generic version of https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27849/Wireless-Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-10?v=t Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10, 20.60.0.

- Apply the https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000024678/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html Recommended Settings for 802.11ac Connectivity.

- Contact the Access Point Manufacturer and make sure they are using the latest Firmware available for them.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- Download Intel® System Support Utility for Windows* and use to Create a log; Scan your system with "Everything" selected, click "Next", then "Save" the output to a file. After that you can attach the file to your thread using the Advanced editor options.

- Try sending files to different hosts and check if the behavior is the same.

- When the issue happens, does the AP reboot completely? or only restarts the connection to this PC? for example, is it reachable from other network hosts at that time?

- Was the AC 9260 built from factory with your PC? or was it an upgrade?

Regards,

- The drivers are up to date like I said current version 20.60.0

- I am using the for IT Administrators version obviously, not the bad ProSet software one, you dont need (Windows controls Wifi since 10 years if you havent noticed that)

- settings are default, I havent changed the settings for the controller

- I did, also, having two access points by two different manufacturers lowers the chance, the issues lays on their end, but on the Intel card

- The access point wont reboot every time, but like I said, maybe if I start a copy process 20 times, it maybe will reboot 2 times. The other 18 tries, it shows the copy behavior like above, that it goes to 0 for a while, then "maybe" begins again (or breaks, or reboots)

- this just happens with Windows Explorer copy over network share, I tried an iperf bandwidth test several times, and that doesnt trigger this, for whatever reason

- it also just happens, if I send FROM the laptop away, sending TO the laptop works every time

- doesnt matter what destination I use

- no, the card is an upgrade for a Dell XPS 15 9570. It had a terrible Killer Wifi card inside and I upgraded it with the Intel one

- I dont see what the Intel® System Support Utility for Windows* would help here. It obviously wont log the network or create a log for it while a copy process breaks down.

Hello klumsch,

Thanks for the update. We would like to inform that we do not recommend, nor support custom integration of wireless adapters as each OEM/ODM may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the software or hardware packaging they provide. We strongly advise you to check with the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support if your PC supports upgrade of wireless adapters.

In our best effort, we advise you to perform the Clean Driver Installation with the steps provided before, this is to make sure you remove other drivers, also, make sure you uninstalled any software from the previous wireless adapter. We would also be glad to review the SSU log.

Additionally, we advise you to open a ticket with the Access Point manufacturer, please check with them for Firmware updates; also disable any bandwidth limitations, or confirm that your PC is set for high priority.

Regards,

Here is a kernel panic of one of the routers. It seems just related to the Intel card, I cant reproduce it with other Wifi cards I have. So your Intel 9260 cards brings at least two routers I own to a total crash, it seems caused by "out of memory", for whatever reason:

similar issues here on a 8265 card, also only happens FROM laptop to another share

i have the slowness issues, and also ping timeouts

I am totally sure, it is some kind of bug in the Intel cards, or Intel didn't properly implement all standards correctly. I actually saw similar issues on forums of Lede/Openwrt with routers with Marvell Chips:

https://github.com/kaloz/mwlwifi/issues/307 Very slow Wifi 5GHz, Intel 8260 (2x2), bad wifi performance in general !!! · Issue # 307 · kaloz/mwlwifi · GitHub

Then I also saw a changelog in a Linksys WRT3200 router, the change says:

"A-MSDU max frame size capped at 7.9K to improve interoperability with Intel 9260-based clients", not sure if this is related though.

Hello klumsch,

Please keep in mind that we do not support custom integration of Wireless adapters. Replacing an adapter associated with specific wireless software and a different adapter type may cause connection issues or software error messages. We strongly recommend you to check on this issue with the computer manufacturer. Additionally, engage the Access Point support about the reboots and kernel panics.

In our best effort, we will be glad to check some details of your system:

1. Perform the Clean driver installation using the latest https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27989/Wireless-Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-10 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10 version 20.70.0.

2. Export the following logs from your computer and attach them to your next post:

a. SSU log with "Everything" selected and attach it to your next post.

b. System event log (clear previous log before reproducing issue), complete log without filters.

c. WLAN Auto-Config log (clear previous log before reproducing issue), complete log without filters.

... please look at the links I posted, youll find lots of other people have issues with at least 9260 and some 826x cards too on the 5Ghz band, with Linksys routers, Marvell Chip routers (OpenWRT/Lede), and I also mentioned mine which is an AVM one.

Hello klumsch,

Thanks for the SSU log, we noticed that some details of the network are blank which is not normal considering that you performed the installation of the new driver. The adapter shows enabled and with a signal strength of 97%, but there are no details about channel, network type, data rates, etc. Unfortunately, the log did not include third party logs, and we did not receive the System/WLAN event logs requested; so we are not able to perform a deeper analysis or engage any additional resources.

We checked the links you provided, some of the issues described there are similar to the one you reported, but each scenario would have to be analyzed individually. It is important to note that you should work with the access point manufacturers on the kernel panics and reboots, this type of issues are normally addressed by them using new firmware of other methods. Even if a wireless client is misbehaving, this should not cause this condition in the Routers or AP's.

At this point, we strongly advise you to contact the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support, since this may be a problem in the computer, or a compatibility issue due to custom integration of the wireless adapter.

Regards,
