Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 doesn't go to monitor mode

i need to use Wireshark to look at traffic in monitor mode but my wireless adapter doesn't seem to work in monitor mode. I use Ubuntu 20.04 and the kernel version is 5.11 and the wireless drive is iwlwifi. When i manually turn the monitor mode by

sudo iwconfig wlp2s0 mode monitor

it automatically goes back to managed mode after few seconds

i have also set the module with amsdu_size=3 value as suggested by this page but it still doesn't work

Hello mrmojo,

Thank you for posting on the Intel communities. In order to have a better understanding of the issue, please share with us the following information:

  1. Was it working before? If so, when did the issue start happening?
  2. Is this a desktop or a laptop?
  3. Have tried using drivers by the OEM?
  4. Does the issue also occur on Windows*?
  5. Is this the original adapter of the system?

No it wasn't working before

It's a ThinkPad L380 laptop

No i haven't tried other drivers except iwlwifi which according to Linux Wireless Wiki is the driver for Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265

I don't have windows so i have no idea

Yes it is the original adapter of the system

Hello mrmojo,

Thank you for the information provided, it is important for you to know that the monitor mode support depends on the Linux driver. The command line '# iw list' will return what is and is not supported for his wireless card.

And check the following in the output:

Software interface modes (can always be added):

*AP/VLAN

*monitor

Also, our recommendation is to check directly with the Wi-Fi Linux community about setting up monitor mode.
