Killer AX1650 stopped working in Mint Linux Cinnamon 20.2

My Killer AX1650 stopped working after upgrading to Mint Linux Cinnamon 20.2.  It was working just fine before I upgraded to the 5.X Kernel.  After a lot of research and troubleshooting I found the Intel site that recommend I load the Intel Wifi 6 AX200 160mhz firmware to get it working.  I loaded the firmware and can see it tries to run but errors out.  I did a sudo dmesg | grep iwlwifi command and the following result occured:

gamina@gamina-Alpha-15-A3DDK:~$ sudo dmesg | grep iwlwifi
[sudo] password for gamina:

Grevim, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance on this scenario, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

What is the model of the motherboard?

If this is a laptop, what is the model of it?

Is this a new computer?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes besides updating to the 5.X Kernel?

The wireless card, did you purchased it separately or did it came installed on the computer?

Does the problem happen at home or in the work environment?

WiFi troubleshooting steps

Step 1: Check whether the kernel version customer uses supports this device:

The reference table of Wireless adapters and corresponding kernel versions is available by the link: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi

The latest FWs are available by the following link: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/

If the kernel version corresponds to the Wireless adapter, proceed with step 2.

Step 2: Check whether the Wireless adapter is connected correctly:

Type the following command to the terminal: # lspci

Verify that the Intel network controller is identified, as on a picture below. If not, then the system doesn't identify the Intel network adapter and you will need to make sure it's properly integrated. You may need to request help from the system manufacturer. If the wireless adapter is properly identified - proceed with the step 3.

Alberto_R_Intel_0-1631739488815.png

Step 3: Check whether this is an iwlwifi issue:

Type the following command to the terminal: # modinfo iwlwifi (example of the command output is on the picture below). If there is no output, then the module isn’t installed this is the distribution installation issue.

Alberto_R_Intel_1-1631739529302.png

Please type: # lsmod | grep iwlwifi

Alberto_R_Intel_2-1631739571378.png

If the result is empty, the driver hasn't been loaded. Most likely to be a distribution issue.

To verify, please type: # dmesg | grep iwlwifi

Alberto_R_Intel_3-1631739604912.png

If the result is empty, the driver wasn’t initialized and this is a distribution issue. If the result is populated as on the above picture, proceeed with the step 4.

Step 4: Check whether the suitable firmware is installed:

Please type: # dmesg | grep “no suitable firmware found!”

Alberto_R_Intel_4-1631739634902.jpeg

If the result is not empty, it means you don't have a suitable FW (api mentioned in the dmesg).

Please visit here https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi for supported FW, or here https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/ for the latest versions.

If these steps didn't reveal the issue or didn't solve the problem, proceed with the Step 5:

Step 5: Collect the debug data:

Please type: # dmesg | grep ASSERT

If the output is empty, please follow this wiki: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi/debugging to extract dmesg and trace-cmd.

If the output has value, please collect from the wiki FW dump too.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Albert R.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance on this scenario, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

What is the model of the motherboard?

Not sure guessing it is a MSI laptop motherboard.

If this is a laptop, what is the model of it?

MSI-Alpha 15 Laptop

Is this a new computer?

No it is not new.  The Killer AX1650x wifi adapter was working just fine with Mint Cinnamon 20.1 before I upgraded to Kernel 5.X as soon as I did that the wireless adapter disappeared in 20.1 and so I tried upgrading to 20.2 to see if it fixed the issue but it did not.  It looks like the firmware which I downloaded from the link you sent me tries to load but fails according to the dmesg | grep iwlwifi output I included at the beginning of this topic.

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes besides updating to the 5.X Kernel?

No I did purchase a tp-link ac600 usb wireless adapter that I was able to load the driver for and get wireless network access working after the Killer AX1650 stopped working.

The wireless card, did you purchased it separately or did it came installed on the computer?

The killer ax1650 wireless card came pre-installed with the laptop when I purchased it.

Does the problem happen at home or in the work environment?

The problem occurs no matter what environment I am in.  I primarily use the laptop at home but do take it with me for work jobs.

Grevim, Thank you very much for providing that information.

We will now do further research on this matter. For us to be able to do that, please provide a detailed description of the steps that you follow in order to get the error so we can try to replicate the issue in our Intel® lab. Also the complete dmesg logs, please type # dmesg > dmesg.log.

Additionally, please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":

Hello Grevim, I just received an update on this matter.

While we are currently reviewing your case, we just wanted to verify if for testing purposes do you have the option to replicate the issue while using Ubuntu as operating system? If you do, please let us know the results once you get the chance.

Hello Albert

I installed ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop and there was no wireless adapters detected with the default install.  I loaded the intel firmware for my killer ax1650x and it still would not load the wireless adapter.  I got the same error as above in the Mint Linux OS.  If is helps at all I could make it so Intel could remote into my laptop to do some testing if you wish.

Thanks,

Melic

Hello Grevim, I just received an update on this matter.

Please visit the link below and try to use and install the generic Linux drivers for the Intel® AX200 wireless card: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000088040/wireless/intel-wireless-products.html

If the problem persists after that, then please visit the Intel Wi-Fi Linux community page for further assistance on this matter:
