Windows 11 clients getting APIPA address with Intel AX 210 NICs

We have a set of Windows 11 (23H2) devices that power off at 11pm every day and power on at 6am the next morning. When they power on, some of the devices will connect and be able to access the network successfully while others do not. The clients affected are random each time and we have not observed any pattern. The ones that don't work connect to wireless but then appear to change their IP from the DHCP assigned one to a 169.254.x.x address (according to wireless server logs). It is different clients every day but the same symptoms.

The NIC is an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 and is running the 23.60.1 driver. This occurs every morning for weeks (not sure exact start time of problem as this is school and these devices were off for long periods of time over the summer). We tried disabling APIPA but that only masked the problem. We have also confirmed that Windows 11 "fast startup" is disabled so the devices should be completely shutting down overnight. The only workaround we have is to send a disconnect from the wireless controller and the devices work when they reconnect.

Other wireless devices are working fine (Chromebooks, iPads, cell phones, etc.).

Hi kmurphy,

Thank you for providing a detailed information. In order to further investigate on the issue, we will be needing the following information:

  • How many devices are affected?
  • What are the exact models of affected devices?
  • Is the AX210 wireless adapter came preinstalled on the devices?
