With the Intel AX211, it is not possible to use the 5GHz band when using a mobile hotspot

I am using a Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i Gen8 RTX3050 model and live in Japan. When I use the AX211 for a mobile hotspot and select 5GHz, I always receive the message, "The selected network band is not available. Please select a different band and try again." However, when I select 2.4GHz, it becomes very slow, but I can still use it. My Wi-Fi router supports IEEE802.11ax and uses the 5GHz 36 channel. Additionally, I am using it indoors. I have seen similar questions and tried clean installs, factory resets, and driver updates, but none of these methods worked. If this is a limitation of the Intel Wi-Fi adapter, I would like to request an improvement.

According to this page: [Intel Support Article](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000029083/network-and-io/wireless.html), it is stated that the 5GHz hotspot can be used by connecting to an AP with approved 5GHz channels, so I believe I meet the requirements.

To get a better understanding of the issue and be able to provide an effective recommendation, please provide the missing key information here:


1) WiFi Router make and model (specifications link if possible);

2) Have you tried other access points (APs) and see if the issue is the same?

3) How did you update the drivers, was it via manual download and install? From which download page?

4) Has this worked previously and just recently stopped?

5) Is the Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX211 Module pre-installed on your Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i Gen8 RTX3050 system?

6) Download Intel® System Support Utility for Windows* software, so we can help check your system configuration and driver details. When the download is complete, launch SSU.exe.

  1. Scan: Check the box Everything.
  2. Click Scan.
  3. Review: When finished scanning, click Next.
  4. Click Save (.txt file) and attach the logs as you reply.

  1. I am using the TP-LINK Archer AX80. Although it is a Japanese site, I will provide the link. 'https://www.tp-link.com/jp/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-ax80/' I will also attach the PDF of the data sheet.

  2. Besides this Wi-Fi, I also tried the NTT RS500MI router, but it was not usable. This is also in Japanese, but I will provide the link. 'https://web116.jp/shop/hikari_r/pdf/HGW_500series_man_201809.pdf' According to the specifications,
    it supports IEEE802.11ac/n/a 5Ghz W52(5150~5250Mhz) , W53(5250~5350Mhz) ,W56(5470~5725Mhz)
    For 2.4Ghz,it supports IEEE802.11n/g/b 2400~2484Mhz with a maximum speed of 300Mbps with a bandwidth of 40Mhz.
    I tried both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, but it still didn't work.
  3. As for the drivers, I am currently using the latest ones installed from Intel’s official site.

  4. This problem has been occurring since I started using it around July, exactly one year ago.

  5. I believe it is pre-installed.

  6. I have attached the file, so I would appreciate it if you could take a look.

As per the log file you shared:


RoamingPreferredBandType:優先バンド: "5. 5GHz と 6GHz バンドを優先 (4)" change to default "No Preference".

If it still fails then it is by design that the mobile hotspot feature would be disabled on some channels to follow the country's regulatory compliance with TPC and DFS.


We recommend enabling the mobile hotspot on non-DFS or non-TPC channels.

Thank you for your reply.

After reviewing your message, I attempted the suggested solutions, but unfortunately, I still encountered error messages. There is something that concerns me, however. The error message only appears with Intel products, whereas some of their products and those from other manufacturers work without issue. I have included links for reference:

Additionally, I have tried the following methods:

1. Using a TP-LINK Wi-Fi router and connecting with IEEE802.11ax while avoiding certain 5GHz channels.
2. Connecting via 5GHz from a LAN cable.
3. Connecting via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
4. Using the Buffalo WI-U3-866D from a domestic manufacturer to set up a 5GHz connection.
5. Using the NEC NS70C MAW (Qualcomm QCA9377).

Results:
Except for methods 4 and 5, all other methods failed to connect. However, even with method 4, the connection only worked on the first attempt. On subsequent attempts, the Intel product was prioritized, leading to errors despite disabling it via the driver. (I will upload screenshots once I can recover the Buffalo USB device, which became unrecognizable when I attempted to take screenshots.)

For method 5, it appears that since it is a non-Intel product from an overseas manufacturer, it was able to work.

I apologize for the lengthy message, but I have some questions.

1. If I take the device overseas (e.g., to the United States or New Zealand), will 5GHz be available for use?
2. If so, could you please explain how Intel products recognize the countries with 5GHz restrictions and whether changing the region and language settings in Windows would affect this?

Lastly, I would like to share some information for those living in Japan who visit this forum.

- Most of Intel's latest Wi-Fi 6E compatible devices may not be able to activate 5GHz for mobile hotspots.

However, please do not be discouraged. If you are using IEEE802.11ax compatible products, you should still be able to achieve speeds of over 100Mbps on 2.4GHz, depending on your connection. In my case, I have confirmed speeds of around 150Mbps for both upload and download when connecting between an AX211 and an iPhone 15 Pro at close range.
