latest Intel 9260 WIn10 Home/pro x64 driver not on this website for download and ad-hoc network issu

I have an old Dell inspiron 7347 that came with the dell 1708 broadcomm chipset. I upgraded to the Intel 7265, 8265, 9260 which all worked on my Win10 Pro x64 laptop. I then upgraded to 9260 and it works also.  However, when I go to the drivers for the wireless driver it says v23.0.5.7 Date 9/6/2023. However, when I go to Intels driver download to see if there is a newer driver it doesn't list the one I have (microsoft update) but the intel website shows me and older version.

Moreover, when I go to the bluetoo driver, it shows Microsofts driver date 6/21/2006 version 10.0.19041.3636. I'd did run into the latest bluetooth driver for the Intel 9260 on intels website and hopefully this is the latest-n-greatest version. I'm surprised windows update didn't install a newer version.

My second problem is that I can't even setup an ad-hoc network between the two laptops. Apparently Microsoft doesn't allow this and has removed the gui interface for this feature. Moreover, I understand that Microsoft's WIDI driver removed ad-hoc too. Thus, I was hoping that the Intel wifi/bluetooth driver would have a working WIDI driver as part of the wireless driver. It seem it does not. If one lists the driver details, it shows "Hosted Network supported: No"

I've read this is due to the WIDI driver. Is there an Intel driver that can be used to provide Ad-Hoc network point-to-point (no router needed) wireless connections so that I can transfer files between laptops?

Due to the number of command steps needed to manually setup the ad-hoc network, I looked into the the github ad-hoc manager software thats makes the setup easy. But enve though it states that the hosted network mode has been set to allow, plust the SSID and login key, it outputs "hosted network couldn't be started" and the "group or resource is not in the current state ot perform the requested operation."  I don't know what this means and how to correct it unless the WIDI driver is the culprit.

Thanks for the help.

Hello, @swegmike

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

I understand that you are having issues with this card. I will do my best to assist you here.

Just to confirm, is the Intel® Wireless-AC 9260 the pre-installed Wi-Fi card in your motherboard or is it an integration (upgrade/ not the original card)?

Best regards,

Since I lost my long post to this forum, I've made a quick list.

a). the 7265,8265,9260 can't do ad-hoc on windows 10. I'd have to go back to windows 7, 8, 8.1 and hope there is an Intel driver that works ad-hoc. I'd hate to see what was stripped from Windows 11. I don't know about all the server versions if they still have it.

b). This intel weblink says the 7260 still works for ad-hoc, but recent posts on the forum state one can't get the driver anymore.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023257/wireless.html?wapkw=ad-hoc

c). Ad-hoc I think is more reliable since it bypasses my Arris router that drops randomly when I try to use network  share via workgroup.

d). Using the cloud to slow due to upload speed of 6mbs max in this day in age - so why pay for something thats so limited.

e). Using usb drives is probably the fastest and most reliable way to transfer 200gigs between laptops

f). Could setup dual boot virtual machines where windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 when booted still have ad-hoc, but not sure if Intel drivers for the above chips exist or if they give ad-hoc capability back. Then when transfer done, boot into windows 10.

Note:

Intel support hardware detect doesn't detect the 7965 revision of my wifi. I think its Rev 59 based on the device driver resource strings.

I don't have the 7265 N dual band chipset.

Intel  gives me 7/9/2023 version 19.51.48.1

Moreover, Intel support hardware software doesn't detect my Bluetooth device nor provide me a bluetooth driver for it.

Be aware that there is a newer Rev D driver supplied, but not the Rev C. Amazon says there is a Rev R but no info for the 796 mention the Rev R or Rev 59 or another Rev. I presume intel may have Rev E thru Q before they got it right with Rev R.

****
Please send link to my bluetooth driver for the 7965 I think is Rev 59

I recently upgraded from the original Dell 1708 (aka broadcom) wireless that is 2G to a dual band Intel one.

Since I didn't know what would work, I tried them all :):  7265 (Rev 59) , 8265, 9260. They all default to using windows 10 pro MSoft drivers from 2006 for wireless and BT. Although they work, windows update didn't give the Intel ones which are more recent.

I have a need to copy files between to laptops that is about 200 gigs as fast as possible. The old laptop still has dell 1708 and the fixed laptop had the 9260. Filese were copied over using the back/restore program EASEUS via a netshare between them. Hence laptop one was sending to router on 2G and the laptop is aon 5G. Needless to say this maxed out the bandwidth the wireless cards could do and the ISP 2G/5G Arris router would arbitrarily disconect and reboot the router. Of course, I can't start where I left off, this could be 2, 6 hours into the transfer with about another 5 hours to go. I have setup the bluetooth to bluetooth (last resort) between the laptops that bypass the router. So I wanted to setup an ad-hoc wireless connection just between the laptops eliminating the router in the loop. But I couldn't do it. I found out at this weblink that ad-hoc was removed by intel because of MSoft wanting people do other things.

See the intel weblink https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023257/wireless.html?wapkw=ad-hoc

I tried AdHocManager from github to help set it up since the gui in windows was removed, but it gives this error message.

he hosted network mode has been set to allow.
The SSID of the hosted network has been successfully changed.
The user key passphrase of the hosted network has been successfully changed.

The hosted network couldn't be started.
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

Since Intel 7265, 8265 and 9260 give this error message, I can't setup an ad-hoc network. The weblink above says 7260 can still do it on windows 10. However, based on recent posts here one can't get the last or older windows 10 driver should I buy that wireless card to get ad-hoc!! So as I go backwards in technology to get what I need and newer technology gives me less and less, my only other alternative is to get two usb network adaptors (since this computer doesn't have the old style network jack). The usb ports are USB 2 I believe ( could be here forever at those speeds to get 200 gigs transferred). Then setup a point-to-point crossover network. Had the computer had the old style 1Gig network jack it'd be better and faster). I'm not sure what MSoft has stripped out of win 10 Home or Pro ( I have both) that was once there before. I hate to find out what disappeared in windows 11.  I'm sure intel has discontinued driver support for some of the USB network adapter cables.

One other possibility is to setup a dual boot on each machine as virutal machines (drives). In this way I boot into one of the Windows 7/8/8.1 on each laptop that still had ad-hoc, and transfer the files that way, but it would still require an Intel 7260 or older card because of the driver functionality still being present. Then once the files are transferred, I could boot into the virtual machine for windows 10.

Another possibility is backup to a usb drive and then plug into the other laptop and use the restore software copy it over. This is probably the fastest way (in spite of the usb slow speeds and more reliable without network drops) . Although the cloud (onedrive and google drive exist), to upload and download from between the laptops, the issue here is that the ISP's wont give one upload speeds greater than 6mbs although I have 100mbs download. So I'll be here months......

Note to Intel:

Your website hardware scanner tool, doesn't  give me the Intel 7965 revision code. I see that the latest drivers for 7965 are for Rev D, but don't give the Rev C ones. I think I determine mine by looking at the device manager resource code and I think its Rev59. Other google searches say there's a Rev R, although the intel drivers don't mention either my Rev 59 or Rev R. Thus, can I assume there were Revs E-Q too?

So it did tell me to get the July 9,2023, Rev 19.51.48.1 which at least installed, but one doesn't know if MSofts year 2006 was better or worse.  However, it never detected or gave me the bluetooth driver for the Intel 7265 Rev 59 hardware so that I can replace MSofts bluetooth driver from 2006.

******

Thus, can you send the link to my 7965 bluetooth device??

****

I will probably run into the same issues upgrading the wifi/BT for the 8265 and 9260 cards to. Either I can't find them on Intel, tor he support hardware doesn't detect them.

Hello, @swegmike

Thank you for the information provided.

However, as for the Intel® Wireless-AC 9260 card, please be aware that Intel does not support wireless integrations (installing a different wireless adapter into your system/laptop). We recommend you speak to the Manufacturer of your equipment for support on wireless integrations and replacement parts to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements of your country and support. It is important to check for compatibility with the System Manufacturer, as there could be certain cards that will not work with the system.

For more information, read the following article under the title "Regulatory Information Regarding Wireless Hardware Installation or Upgrade.

On the other hand, as for the AC 8265 and N 7265 cards, due to these products being discontinued, Intel Customer Service no longer supports inquiries for them. You may also find the Discontinued Products website, helping to address your request.

You can get the specifications and verify this product's discontinuance status at the Intel® Product Specifications website > Marketing Status > "Discontinued":  Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7265Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265

Please, keep in mind that this thread will no longer be monitored by Intel. Thank you for your understanding.

First of all, the 9260 and 7265 (Rev. D) are active products and covered by the latest driver packages (Bluetooth here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18649 and Wireless here:  https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19351).

Next, the 8260, 8265, 7260 and 7265 (Rev. C) are discontinued products. As such, downloads of driver packages are few and far between. Me to the rescue. When the adapters were discontinued, I saved off copies of the final packages supporting them. I have a share (here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AtacZBU04mo-j-tQ34BdSDv6y1BFsg) that you can use to download these packages.

As for the issues with Ad-Hoc, I have never attempted to use this feature so cannot comment.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the link. I'll try them out for the 7265 BT.   I bought this off amazon to update my dell from a slow broadcomm 1708 2G to a dual one so that I can max out home internet at 100mbs vs. at 54mbs.

Since the 7265 and above can't due ad-hoc per the info I found on intel website I waiting on a 7260 that suposedly can. It's fro dell per their listing. Even though I';m not using dell drivers for my laptop model inspirion 7347 since they don't exist for win 10 but only for the chipset 1708 and windows 8 that it came with. I could try to find the drivers for intel chipsets used in other dell models and see if they will install.

I understand the 7265 is considered obsolete, but people do upgrade their wireless connections for faster speeds and buy from amazon and ebay etc but need the drivers wifi/BT if MSoft update doesn't provide it. It doesn't matter that one doesn't have an OEM one since vendor supplied one does work.  However, Intel hardware support scanning software only tells me its a 7265, it "doesn't" tell me what Revision # or letter it is. Thus the scanning software needs updating so I know what I'm looking for. I looked at the resource string and I think its Rev 59.

i still have old desktops from the early 1990s that ran windows XP, and would still need to find drivers for just about anything going back that far and so would others.

So it's great that you've saved off the old stuff since people still need it. Websites like drivers.com and others have alot but aren't always update to date. or have them all.  Perhaps you can upload your collection to the various driver sites so that others can find them easily.   I know that broadcom is terrible at providing drivers and relies on the OEM vendor. So one tends not to buy their chipsets on ebay and amazon because of that.

So if the 7260 doesn't do wifi ad-hoc connections (pc-to-pc) like the info says on the internet, the alternative is bluetooth-to-bluetooth, thus the need for the latest driver besides Msofts 2006 one.

I can't in good conscience upload these drivers to sites that I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw them. Of course, the same could be said about me - and, with my aging brain, *I* say this about me (but I don't do viruses).
