Portwell IoT Gateway Application Note on Intel® Solution

Situation

Intelligent gateways perform a vital role in the Internet of Things (IoT) by collecting sensor data at the network edge, then acting as a filter to analyze and normalize the data for sharing through the network and into the Cloud.

Intel is developing a family of "Gateway Solutions for IoT" that enables connectivity between new and legacy devices by integrating technologies for networking, embedded control, enterprise-grade security, and easy manageability. Portwell, Inc.—a premier member of the Intel IoT Solutions Alliance—has a wealth of embedded computing experience and expertise in the industrial automation, network security and medical equipment markets with its version of the Intel Quark™ SoC and other Intel architecture-based Intelligent Gateways, many will be packaged with Wind River® IDP and McAfee® Security stack.

Challenge

The key benefits of Intelligent Gateways include increased data and sensors, faster response time, greater connectivity and smarter user interfaces all of which contribute to an enhanced user experience. These benefits, however, do come at a price: the need for increased processor performance, greater power and added heat. While general-purpose or standard processors are popular for running applications in deeply embedded systems and subsystems, they typically are not optimized for dedicated tasks, such as those required to support IoT applications.

Solution

Portwell PI-81A0 Intelligent IoT Gateway

Portwell's PI-81A0 solution is a small form factor embedded system that utilizes the Intel Quark SoC X1000 processor family. The PI-81A0 is designed and built with a small footprint and very low power consumption to specifically target gateway solutions for IoT applications. Subsequently, it comes pre-loaded with a comprehensive communications and security solution from Wind River and McAfee to provide seamless and secure connectivity between devices and the Cloud through an open architecture and integrated interoperable support that enables rapid application and service differentiation.

a. The Intel Quark SoC X1000 Industry/Energy Reference Design platform is based on the Intel Quark SoC, a single-core SoC product featuring high levels of I/O integration and low power consumption. This platform demonstrates the SoC in an embedded, lower power, and small form factor solution. Plus, with its inherently strong security and manageability features, this SoC is ideally suited for users of both current IoT and the next wave of cost-effective, intelligently connected devices.

b. Portwell's PI-81A0 utilizes the IntelQuark SoC X1000, a single-core 32nm SoC with a clock rate of up to 400 MHz. The PI-81A0 includes a range of interfaces, such as dual 10/100 Fast Ethernet, one USB 2.0 Host port, one USB

2.0 Device port, and 8-channel analog to digital convertor inputs. There are 512 kilobytes of on-chip embedded. SRAM and an integrated DDR3 memory controller supporting up to 2G@800MTs—plus an optional Wi-Fi or Wireless

module.

IoT Gateway Application Concept

Ideal for consumers who can now monitor or control their smart energy devices or home automation systems via smart-phones or tablets. For example, a powerful Intel Quark SoC processor running within an OS is typically used as the host that enables a wide range of software and firmware customization. It also enables the IoT Gateway to manage communications, data processing and applications locally instead of relying on intelligence in the Cloud.

※ In the healthcare arena, IoT can improve access to care, increase the quality of care and most importantly reduce the cost of care.

※ The network that connects homes via the smart meter extends to a wide number of systems that can operate with each other automatically and/or be monitored and controlled by human operators at control centers or via the Cloud.

※ Similar networks can connect factory equipment via the smart IoT gateway to a wide number of systems monitored and controlled by human operators at control centers or via the Cloud, often resulting in a greater competitive edge.
