Hey guys,
I've recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Zenbook Prime UX31A and micro HDMI port is not working at all. Basically, when I plugin microhdmi to HDMI cable to the port nothing happens. Neither laptop or TV detect a new screen. I've been reading online that this might be an issue with the driver.
I've tried multiple drivers from both ASUS and Intel's website and it's still a no go. Current drivers that I'm using on it are:
Version V9.17.10.2828Description Intel Graphics Driver
File Size 157,12 (MBytes) 2012.10.19 update
Can you please help?
Thanks,
Dragan S.

Just wanted to share that my issue was solved by simply getting another cable. I had bought a cheap ass micro hdmi->hdmi cable from dealextreme.com which didn't work with my UX31A Touch, tried everything; upgraded the BIOS, upgraded the drivers from INtel. Nothing worked; it's like the cale was not there; nothing to be seenon the laptop and the screens remained black. (tested on three different screens).
Today I went to the shop & got me a cable that set me back €36,- (it's called a 'high speed HDMI cable') and things worked instantly. Plugged it in and everything is now working flawlessly.
Just my 2 cents. don't trust your $8,- cables....

Damn I've just bought a new cable, we tested it on some random monitor in the store and it worked, but as I came to the office again it's the same problem for me on UX31a. Now I'm doubting that it actually works on monitors with resolutions lower than full HD - both my monitor and TV are full HD, and only time it worked was with that low-res monitor in the store.
UPDATE: tried to lower the resolution for second display and as soon as I clicked to some other value (I think 1366X768) I've realized something happened / switched. I've got the cable out, put it back and voila! At the moment it works flawlessly. I really can't explain what happened here, just like the computer or monitor needed the initial contact through some lower resolution so they would establish HD.
Strange, will keep update if anything changes.
Good luck.

@Filip I tried your method to no avail, however that is an interesting point. The first monitor I tried hooking my laptop up to was 1050p and it worked, but I also tried a 1080p tv which worked with no issues. One other different I just noticed is that when I tried hooking it up while it was plugged in it did not work, however all previous attempts while running on battery worked fine. I'm not sure if this could have cause the issue, hopefully not because that probably means I fried something...I am going to pick up another micro HDMI cable per @Roel's suggestion to see if that works.

I can add the following... Before I bought the new cable which now makes everything work, I transiently had one of my 3 tvs working with an adapter.... that TV also happened not be a 720p TV, not 1080.
It looks as though we are narrowing this down to be related to 1) cable and 2) more specifically, especially with 1080/highest resolution.
Perhaps Rob (or someone else with more technical know how than I have) can shed some light on cables.... The cable that I bought that continues to work perfectly says HDMI 1.4 with ethernet capability. I wonder if that makes a difference. I know some cables say 1.3. That stuff is over my head.
It's kind of a shame that since they included a "dongle" for DVI and Ethernet, that they didn't do the same with an HDMI adapter which they knew worked... it would have cost them a total of $1-2 per unit and would have avoided a HUGE amount of frustration for all of us (not to mention their tech support people who are still in denial).

This is getting very weird. After I've read Caleb's post I realized that it would work only if I connect it while working on the battery, but then keep on working when I add the AC power. BUT, it stops working as soon as I connect something to the USB port next to it. USB port on the other side of the case is not interfering.
What might be the issue is some resources handling, power or IRQ. I think my fan issue might be also related to this.

Just an FYI. I too am annoyed by HDMI output issues on my brand new win 8 UX31A. Cable works fine at 1080 on many other devices. There is a problem with this Zenbook. A cable that has worked to connect many different devices of various types and manufacturers should work fine on this ultrabook. It seems to me that ASUS needs to do a bit more HDMI testing in their labs. My ASUS Transformer Infinity Prime has had several HDMI output issues as well...all of them have been broken software updates and have now been fixed, but these issues shouldn't be making it into production hardware or software.
Test the dang HDMI output! ASUS, are you listening?
I am otherwise happy with this ultrabook, but to me this is not a small issue. I better be able to source a cable that works reliably or this thing is getting returned.

Hello everyone,
I too was in the same boat until I tried something silly out of frustration. I was using a microHDMI-to-HDMI adapter to connect to my zenbook. After trying unsuccessfully to make the external display work for about 30 min or so , I pushed the adapter with more force and to my surprise it seemed to do the trick. Looks like the micro HDMI port on the zenbook requires very tight fit. May be this is a build issue with the zenbooks.
My setup for completeness-
Bought zenbook with Windows 7 and later upgraded to Win 8 Pro. I'm using cheap HDMI cable and a microHDMI-to-HDMI adapter (from monoprice) to connect the laptop to my Sony HDTV.
HTH.

Hello,
I also have the same problem. My Zenbook is a UX31A with Windows 8 (from factory, no updated). I have tried with two displays, with the same cable and it worked with just one of them. This is my situation:
- Samsung TV UE32B7020 --> Working as it should do.
- LG Monitor E2351VR --> Not working at all.
The cable is an microHDMI-HDMI (you can find it here: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0053CFH4Y/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01 mumbi Micro HDMI Kabel 1080p - vergoldete Kontakte: Amazon.de: Elektronik).
And my drivers are up-to-date according to ASUS (9.17.10.2828)
This is a really disappointing issue for a high-end device like this ultrabook...

My problem was fixed after buying an incredibly overpriced HDMI cable from a local office supply store. I didn't want to fuss with it any longer so i didn't bother buying other reasonably priced cables to try. i found one that works and that's good enough for me.

I too have been having this issue with the mini connector. I lost a whole hour and had to send my assistant to get another computer so that I could present at my conference. What an embarrassment. I bought this computer for its look and because it is lightweight for travel. My Please share with me the brand of the higher end cable. I am so frustrated.

Same problem with Asus UX31A with Win 8 update
Same problem with last Asus Drivers or last 100% Intel Drivers (no difference, always "no signal" on TV.
HDMI cable and adaptater works fine with other PC
I have test 2 HDMI adaptater and 3 HDMI cable.
Solution for me :
1°) Connect HDMI cable
2°) Launch Drivers installation (Display HD4000 Asus or Intel Drivers)
3°) Then it detect TV screen and all works great.
Don't reboot system when asking and u can use 2 screens.
When you reboot system it cause the bug...
It's not the best solution but you can use your HDMI port when you launch install drivers...

Yes. I had noticed something similar with my first cable, though I couldn't actually get it to output to the display, the driver was able to detect the display right after going through the installer. Much like you. The new higher quality cable has put the issue completely behind me. If you get tired of the headaches of working around the bug, just try out some better quality cables. I'm pretty sure you will find one that works well all the time.

Same issue. As soon as I restart after installing the drivers, it loses the hdmi output. Right after installing the drivers it works though. Rebooting causes the bug. Please fix...

POSSIBLE FIX***
After purchasing zenbook i too had no hdmi output whatsoever, no signal on the tv or any detection on the laptop that there was a tv connected. Tried updating drivers to latest version but no change.
I then looked at the cable (laptop end) and the plastic surrounding the actual connector that goes inside the laptop was hard against the side of the laptop. I decided to trim around 3mm off the plastic coating to allow the connector to go further into the laptop and HEY PRESTO!!! a fully working hdmi lead instantly with no issues whatsoever.
I'm running windows 7 so dont know if this will help ppl on w8.
Hope this help a few of you!!

Hey guys I just got the UX31A-BHI5T11 2 days ago and was having the same HDMI problem everyone was reporting. I joined the site just to post my fix. If you have not already, download the Intel 4000 driver directly from Intel's site, not Asus. Took 5 minutes and fixed my problem 100%. No need for a different cable or adapter. Sorry, if this has already been posted somewhere else, just thought I would help out with anyone frustrated with this problem.

All,
I wanted to chime in and say that everyone I know who has the UX31a, has this same issue. I work at Microsoft and all employee's got a new PC recently so we could all have touch devices. The ux31a is one of the devices we were able to choose from and it is the device many people chose. Everyone I know with this device has this same issue and cannot use MiniHDMI to connect to projectors in the conference rooms. Changing the cables is not going to be an option so I was hoping the driver fix suggested above would - that was a mistake.
The driver released in March complete hosed the PC. It causes all monitors to use the generic display driver and extended displays and multi-monitor sets up cannot be used.

I was having the same HDMI issue in a similar situation to Ryan as a Microsoft employee issued the UX31a. I have just fixed the problem today by cutting 2mm off the connector housing revealing just that bit more of the mini-HDMI connector which in turn means proper connection with the socket on the UX31a. There must be a design fault in that the mini-HDMI socket is too far recessed. slartibarfast must have got lucky when buying a new cable in that it happened to have a longer mini-HDMI connector.
Works fine now on all projectors in our conference rooms.

What a great solution! I have had a long discussion with ASUS support. First they made made me downgrade from W8.1 to W8.0 with all the trouble that came along with that. That didn't help of course. After that they wanted me to send the computer to them for repair. I must say that they seem completely incompetent! All along the problem was the same as yours: the connector on the adapter was a little too short! So I took your advice and cut about 1 mm of plastic, and voila! Now it works perfectly! Thank you so much for your smart discovery!

Hey guys!
Any new solutions to this problem? I am getting frustrated, just bought a Zenbook two weeks ago. I only get the mini HDMI to work on one very old monitor, but not on a new one, also not on the LCD TV and a LCD projector.
A tried installing new drivers, cutting the cable...nothing helps. ..
THanks
