Aero crashing on Win7 with an i7-6700HQ

Hi !

I bought a brand new MSI PE70 6QE with Win10, but for some reasons I decided to install Windows 7 instead.

The problem is that after installing all the last drivers, everything is running well EXCEPT that the computer is unable to run Aero more than 30 minutes. It makes quite mad because my older computer (with an i5 and only 6Go of DDR3) had no problems running it, and now that I bought a good computer (i7-6700HQ and 24Go of DDR4) it doesn't survive to Aero.

It looks like the integrated graphics are not powerfull enought. Can someone help me with my problem? I'd really like to run Aero smoothly on a computer with that configuration !

Thanks a lot, and sorry for my english !

Intel Core i7-6700HQ

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M (2Go)

SSD 500Go + HDD 1To

24Go DDR4

Hi Esteban,

I'm actually talking via emails with the guy from the french MSI Customer Service, I guess it is someone really professionnal because he just told me that if I do not care of Aero, I just have to deactivate it, so this way my problem will be gone !

This is really not the kind of answer I was expecting so I'm a little bit bored actually. I'll see if I get a new answer by the beggining of the week. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for caring by the way !

Hi WTPThom ,

Sorry to hear that you have such big headache with that laptop.

I think you should try to see if you don't have problems with windows 10 also, because I saw many laptops with problems even on windows 10. If laptop has problem in windows 10 also you can easy talk to msi and they will have not to do but to fix your problem.

I see a problem fixed more on windows 10 then on windows 7. Windows 7 will not be supported that much by microsoft, they are more focused on windows 10 because they want to have only one operating system, not to have 3 and none working as it should.

At the moment I think all microsoft developer team is focused on fixing bugs on windows 10, because on 2 August they will release the new anniversary edition of windows 10...

Hi Esteban,

We are still investigating.. Apparently they tried a PE70 on Win7 without getting the problem, so I asked them to try an exact procedure that make my computer lag every single time. If they don't encounter my problem with this procedure, I guess that I have a faulty computer. We'll see.

Thank you for staying interested !

Have a nice day,

Thomas.

Hi Esteban !

Nothing really new, I updated the BIOS again.. I still have to test the computer without the G-Skill memory, but as long as I have to open the computer, I'll do it this weekend.

I'm not forgetting you don't worry !

Have a nice day,

Thomas.

Hi, WTPThom :

Thank you for the answer and update!

I encounter myself with this article from MS mentioning something that I found interesting and thought about this case.

It is about graphics memory and how it is used/implemented.

I thought it would be good to create a graphics report to check if there is some lack/issue with graphics memory (amount).

This is because of the bullet saying: "The Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) checks for the available graphics memory and takes the action to turn off or turn on the Premium Aero Glass experience based on the amount of available memory." Which could be affecting the performance of Aero.

Please let me know if you can get the report

Hello, WTPThom:

I just wanted to double check, were you able to check the information provided above?

Additionally, any input from MSI about this?

Hope I can hear from you positively

Hi Esteban,

Sorry for not giving you more updates but I'm really busy with work these times and haven't taken the time to open the computer to remove the GSkill memory.

I looked to your link but I haven't understood how I can get this report? I actually had deactivated WinSAT a few months ago when seeing that it could cut Aero and make the computer lag when doing its tests. Unfortunately, it wasn't the problem, but I kept it deactivated.

I'll do my best to take the time..

Have a nice day,

Thomas.

Edit : My grand father bought the same PC, installed Win7 and has the same problem. It actually occurs when a second screen is plugged in HDMI and the display settings is on "extended desktop" ! No problem when the screens are just duplicated. That adds a new variable to the equation

I feel really comfortable with Windows 7 and I don't like Windows 10, that's why I keep using 7. No matters if Microsoft tries to force me to go with Windows 10, that's not what I want. It would be great if somebody from Intel could tell me something about my problem..

Thanks

Hello, WTPThom:

No problem, when time is available, you can perform the tests.

Regarding the article, sorry for the confusion, it explains how memory is reported to the applications and for development purposes. What I wanted to point out was the possible lack of memory that could be causing the issue.

Please keep us posted with the results of the RAM mentioned.

Hello, WTPThom:

Hi Esteban !

Sorry for taking that long. But I finally had time to perform the tests this morning. I've only had to finish a project first.

Unfortunately, even after removing the GSkill memory, the problem is still here.....

I'm starting to be a little bit bored because we've tried everything without solving the problem. MSI did the same tests as me and they don't encounter any problems. On my side, my grand father bought the same computer, and it also has the problem, so I guess my case is not isolated, but I won't believe that we've both got a faulty computer, it would be really unlucky...

You can find the video I sent to MSI here : https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2Ixsob06flJNG15dkVTeUd5STA CLICK, I'm speaking in French but what I'm saying is not really important.

Have a nice day,

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

From what I saw in that video you were watching a video and the video was playing at very low frame rate, and windows noticed that and changed some visual effects settings for the video to play at higher framerate.

Is that right ?

I noticed also that the video player is VLC. That's important to reproduce the problem.

Hi Ronin,

Here is exactly what I did :
  • I opened some windows, I putted my mouse in the bottom right corner of the screen, which is supposed to show the desktop. From this exact moment the computer starts lagging, it is already noticeable when I move the mouse over the icons on the bottom or when I move the windows.
  • I then launched a video to show that lag more visually, and to "accelerate" the coming of the "low performances" window. This was just to get that window to appear faster, but it always does.
  • Then I click on "Activate the basic Windows 7 color theme" (approximative traduction ^^), It turns Aero OFF, and the lag disappears.

Sorry about the quality of the video I made, I only had my smartphone to record that !

Can you please do the same test with task manager on screen and check how much the CPU is occupied ?

You know that microsoft is not really supporting skylake CPU on windows 7

There are some new video drivers : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downloads/eula/26228/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?httpDown=https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26228/eng/win64_154028.4501.zip Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 and Windows 7*/8.1* [15.40]

I also found a problem with drivers or maybe with windows itself on windows 7 and 8.

Internet Explorer by default works in 32 bit mode

To enable Explorer to work in 64 bit, you must go to Internet Options/ Advanced and check the Enable 64 bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode (thats for windows 8.1, in windows 7 is a bit different but it is on the same tab).

There is a problem in 32 bit mode when IE fills memory to about 3GB, IE crashes. (this happened in facebook when scrolling down on users posts)

In windows 10 there no such problem because IE and Edge work only in 64 bit ...

Thank you peer for the recommendations given!!

WTPThom, please let us know how it goes with 4501 drivers.

Would you please provide us with an event log while the system is behaving like this?

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749339(v=ws.11).aspx Archive an Event Log

Have you used different HDMI cables? Since I recall you mentioned the system has better performance without the second monitor, it be good to check that.

I will be sending this over to the investigation team in order to further assist you. Will keep you updated.

WTPThom,

Here checking if you have been able to test this out with the 4501 drivers and get the event log?

Additionally, have you tested the behavior of the system if you disable the dGPU (Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M)?

This can be done in the device manager, display adapter, properties of dGPU, and disable.

Please let me know.
