After updating to Windows 8.1: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Hello, I have a Dell XPS13 with the INTEL HD Graphics 4400 processor

Driver version 10.18.10.3304

OS: Win 8.1 Pro (6.3.9600)

with the Intel Core i7-4500U CPU 1.80GHz processor

8MB RAM

Open GL Ver 4.2

Open CL Ver 1.2

Right now, I can't go to the EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> Performance tab... whenever I try to go there, I get the driver error that says the driver stopped and was recovered... but photoshop CS6 still hangs and stops responding.

I have to kill it with task manager...

are there any updates or fixes I can get for this?

Thanks,

Hello Nic,

I tried to install it, but in the install process it gave me the following message:

Error

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

Setup will exit.

My laptop is the Dell XPS13, Windows 8.1

Regards,

Sarah

I can confirm that although the driver suggested by Nic is older than the one that Windows update installed (that caused Photoshop CS6 to crash the graphics driver) it does indeed work to correct the Photoshop issue.

Many thanks Nic!

I am using a Lenovo Yoga 11S with Haswell i3-4020Y, Windows 8.1 x64.

As an update to this - The fix stated DOES NOT WORK.

The issue is related to STR - if your computer has been to sleep in S3 state, whence it wakes up it will cause issue with Adobe's GPU Acceleration.

Workaround until Intel fixes driver state (or Adobe patches Intel's driver state) is to start Photoshop from a fresh boot that hasn't gone to sleep and goto Edit --> Preferences --> Performance and disable GPU acceleration.

Once the PC goes to sleep and wakes, Photoshop will open fine. Just such a shame that you will be without GPU based rendering.

Hi pixel/SarahSmile,

Can you please test the new driver? Here is the download link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3720&DwnldID=23639 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3720&DwnldID=23639

If you get a notification message during the installation, it indicates that your computer manufacturer does not allow the installation of generic Intel video drives. You are required to install drivers from your computer manufacturer.

You may try to force the installation of Intel generic drivers by performing manual procedure, see here for instructions:

Okay - I have cycled S3 state a couple of times and CS6 seems to be opening fine without causing the error initially described above.

If I do see the error again today I will report, and likewise if it seems the error has gone I will also report.

This seems to be fine - thanks Kevin.

Have cycled through all CPU and sleep S_x states and driver behaves on wake or resume.

I am having the same issue as the OP and am unable to update my driver with the driver in your post. I get the message "latest driver already installed". I am doing it manually through Device Manager. My current driver is listed as 10.18.10.3355 and the date is 11/15/2013. Can you help?

My laptop is Lenovo Yoga 2 13 running Windows 8.1 64 bit

Update: Nevermind, I was able to install the newer driver by uninstalling the old one in Device Manager and rebooting which reverted to the Windows 8 default display driver and then installing this new Intel driver manually through Device Manager
